Finished House of Cards? Here Are 10 More Netflix Suggestions

It’s exactly a week since Netflix released the third season of House of Cards. And if, like me, you’ve already finished all 13 episodes you’re probably facing the prospect of boring evenings with nothing to watch. So I figured it was time to compile another list of Netflix suggestions. The similar post I put together before Christmas was freakishly popular (much to my surprise) and I’m hoping you’ll find more TV shows, documentaries and movies to add to your playlists from this selection. Take a look…

1. Damages

Think Francis Underwood is the master of manipulation? Then you obviously haven’t seen Glenn Close in Damages. She plays Patty Hewes, a powerful Manhattan lawyer who uses those around her dangerous effect. Rose Byrne co-stars as a law graduate who’s taken under Patty’s wing. It’s dark, thrilling, totally addictive and – in my humble opinion – even better than House of Cards.

Watch it if… you like House of Cards, Scandal and The Good Wife

2. Miss Representation

Actress Jennifer Lynn Siebel Newsom was sick of playing sex objects and airheads, so she produced a documentary that explores mainstream media’s under-representation of women in influential positions. Weaving together interviews with teenage girls, politicians and filmmakers, Miss Representation paints a pretty bleak picture about the way women are viewed across TV and film. It’s an absolute must-see and

here’s a taster.

3. Virunga

Virunga was nominated in the Best Documentary Feature category at the Oscars, which is how it came to my attention on Netflix. It focuses on the conservation team working to protect the last mountain gorillas living in Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and the messy situation that unfolds when a British company move in to search for oil. It’s upsetting and deeply depressing, but I think it’s an important film to see.

Watch it if… you can stomach tough subject matters

4. Morning Glory

I’ve watched

Morning Glory on Netflix at least four times since it was first uploaded, and I’m not ashamed to admit it. Rachel McAdams plays a television producer hired to revive a morning TV show with poor viewing figures, and Harrison Ford and Diane Keaton are great as her squabbling news anchors. It wasn’t a critical hit, but I think it’s a fun, easy watch.

Watch it if… you enjoyed Bridewars, The Devil Wears Prada and 27 Dresses

5. And the Oscar Goes To…

This documentary traces the history of the Academy Awards and brings together a fantastic selection of highlights from Oscar history. Anjelica Huston narrates the film and a who’s who of Hollywood Royalty appear in exclusive interviews. I’m talking Cher, Tom Hanks, George Clooney, Whoopi Goldberg, Billy Crystal, Jane Fonda and many more.

Watch it if… you’re experiencing Award Season withdrawals

6. Pretty Little Liars

Netflix brought Pretty Little Liars to the UK at the start of the year, so now you can watch the latest episodes a day after they air in the US (if every show did this illegal online streaming would no longer be a problem). PLL is the most ridiculous TV show ever, but I’m completely hooked on it despite my best judgement. If you love a teen drama you must give the show a go!

Here’s a cheesy trailer for season one.

Watch it if… you like Gossip Girl, Desperate Housewives and One Tree Hill

7. Terms And Conditions May Apply

Do you always check the “I Agree” box without reading through the terms and conditions on websites like Facebook, iTunes and Amazon? You’re not alone. And this documentary reveals how much information we’re freely giving away about ourselves and what the future holds for online privacy. It’s fascinating, yet slightly terrifying.

Here’s the trailer.

8. Stuck in Love

I don’t remember a time when Stuck in Love wasn’t in my Netflix “Top Picks” bar, so a few weeks ago I finally gave in and watched it. I had seriously low expectations, but actually found it quite enjoyable. The cast is great – Greg Kinnear, Jennifer Connelly, Lily Collins, Logan Lerman, Kristen Bell – and it’s a sweet story that avoids any naff rom-com clichés. Don’t believe me?

Here’s the trailer.

Watch it if… you’re a romantic at heart but hate cheesy Katherine Heigl movies

9. Suits

If you’re a fan of House of Cards, Scandal, The Good Wife and Mad Men chances are you’ll also like Suits. It centres around a college dropout who starts working for one of Manhattan’s most powerful lawyers, despite the fact he doesn’t actually have a law qualification. The men are hot, and the women are sassy and smart, so what’s not to love?

Watch it if… you’re in desperate need of workwear inspiration

10. Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

Another Netflix Originals series premieres today: Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, which was created and written by Tina Fey and Robert Carlock. The Office‘s Ellie Kemper plays Kimmy, a woman raised in a doomsday cult who escapes and moves to New York City to start a new life. Curious? Then

here’s the trailer. I definitely plan to check it out this weekend.
