Spooning Since Frame DIY
My husband and I have never been huge Valentine’s Day celebrators. Restaurants get CRAZY crowded on Valentine’s Day (a two hour wait for Red Lobster? No thanks) and since we both have birthdays around Valentine’s Day (mine is January, his is March), it’s a little stressful in the gift department.
What kind of gift says, “I love you,” anyways? An iPad? A new pair of shoes? I don’t know, it just doesn’t make sense to me.
This year my husband surprised me with flowers and a picture he’d crafted for me HIMSELF (he hot glued Conversation Hearts on it, if that isn’t cute I don’t know what is), so I knew I wanted to make something for him, too!
I’d seen a picture like this “Spooning” one online a couple of weeks earlier. I’m honestly not sure who shared it or if they made it or bought it, but when I saw it I filed it away to memory because it was so cute! So when I got that sweet gift from my husband, I decided to make it. I just went off of memory, since I remembered the main idea and knew it would be fairly simple. While putting this post together, I found tons of versions of this for sale on Etsy ($36?! Girls…make your own) and a few online tutorials, so you very well may have seen these before. But in case you haven’t, here’s how I made mine!
You’ll need:
Frame — size is up to you. I used an 8×10 and it was a great size. Make sure you can remove the glass! I wanted to hang ours on the wall, so I chose a wall frame. This one was half price at Hobby Lobby!
2 spoons — I used two of the same spoons, but used a big one and a small one. My husband is quite a bit bigger than me (I’m a shortie), so I thought it was fitting. Another cute idea would be to use a bulky, more manly spoon with a fancy spoon. Whatever floats your boat! (Spoons pictured are not the ones I used — I grabbed those later when I decided to share a tutorial)
Hot glue — you could also use super glue or any heavy duty craft glue.
Gold spray paint — optional, depending on what color spoons you want. This paint was just stuff we already had, so it’s what I used.
Cardstock — you could also use fabric I suppose, but cardstock is simple to trim and glue, so it’s what I went with. I used craft paper cardstock because I like the rustic brown color.
1. Spray your spoons. Lay them on their side after spraying the front to allow the excess to drip off. Otherwise it wants to pool in the spoon. I learned this the hard way.
2. Design your lettering. I used PicMonkey, and it only took a few minutes!
To use PicMonkey to create this, choose the design tab on the home page. Choose the canvas size that corresponds with your frame. I chose 8×10.
Choose a font, and do your lettering. The size is up to you, I found that I had plenty of space if I left about 2/3 of the canvas blank for the spoons.
3. Remove glass from frame, and trim cardstock to fit. Make sure to test the cardstock in the frame so ensure that it fits perfectly, then glue the cardstock to the inside of the back of the frame. This will give it some sturdiness — one piece of cardstock is too flimsy to hold the weight of the spoons. If your frame was backless, cut a piece of cardboard to fit and attach the cardstock to that.
4. Once your spoons have dried, place them on the cardstock, then mark dots at both ends of the spoons, so you know where to attach them. Place a dab of glue on each mark, then place your spoons and let dry.
That’s it!! Easy peasy. This is such a cute piece hanging in your home, and makes a fabulous wedding or anniversary gift!
