Natural Dye Easter Eggs [eco-friday Easter edition]

Making natural dye Easter eggs using wooden eggs, spices, vegetables and fruit is a fun, slightly messy activity to do with toddlers and kids of all ages. Part science and part craft!

We love having fun with natural materials including natural dyes made from fruit, vegetables and spices! We’ve painted with natural dyes and we even made scarves using natural dyes. I found these great wooden eggs and I just knew we would have a great time playing around with natural dyes and experimenting with adjusting the pH levels using vinegar and bicarbonate of soda to make natural dye easter eggs. They’ll be a great play prop throughout the year as well!

Supplies

  • Wooden eggs
  • Spices (we used turmeric), vegetable juices or fruit juices
  • Bicarbonate of Soda (baking soda)
  • Distilled vinegar
  • Assorted paintbrushes
  • Bowls

Instructions

Step 1

Mix up your dye. You can try varying the concentration by diluting with water. See what colour changes happen when you add bicarbonate of soda or distilled vinegar. We found that the vinegar didn’t really change the color of the turmeric dye, but that the bicarbonate of soda produced a lovely earthy, orange color.

Step 2

Dip or paint your wooden eggs. You can even try painting them with the dye and then adding the vinegar in a pattern over the top.

Step 3

Let your wooden eggs dry. This is very important, you won’t get a true indication of how well the dye has taken with the wooden egg until it is properly dry.

You can even make a nest, like this clay one we made at forest school, perfect for storing your natural dye easter eggs!
