Puur Haken Summer Shawl

Like I mentioned yesterday, I found some ochre yellow skeins in my stash and couldn’t resist working up another sunny version of the Summer Shawl from my book Puur Haken.

The shawl is made of two skeins of Louet merino wool, the GEMS range Sport weight colour Golden Rod. Two years ago when I lived in Toronto, Canada, I wanted to work with local yarns. I got in touch with Louet and they sent me a sample package with 2 skeins of pretty much every yarn in their collection. Little did I know, soon after that we moved back to The Netherlands. So I never got beyond that sample pack and this is actually the first time I am using some of it. Part of the master plan of using up my stash, you know.

Last weekend was very sunny, I couldn’t help but getting these golden skeins out. Pottering around what pattern to pick, I couldn’t decide between knitting and crocheting, and all of a sudden I decided to just use my own pattern from Puur Haken. It is by far one of the most crocheted patterns from my book and it makes me proud. It really is a shawl you can make over and over again, play with variegated yarn or a contrasting border, make a Winter or in this case a Spring version.

This time I choose to finish the skeins for one shawl and not make a contrasting border. I actually just didn’t make it, I was about 2 meters short of yarn. So I frogged the final round of the border and redid it with a little adjustment; bobbles made of one less loop and I skipped the chain stitch just before and after every ‘crown’. And now I can say; 2 skeins is just enough to make this shawl with hook size 4 mm and only 17 rows of waves. But due to the heavier yarn and larger hook, it ended up being the same size as the original shawl.

Now, does this say Spring to you or what?

About the yarn: Boy, is this a gorgeous yarn to crochet with. My goodness, it is such a dream on the hook. Quick, no-split, and on top of that it is not hot but very airy and just super soft around my neck. Perfect for Spring shawls. Not all merino wool is as suitable for crocheting as it may be for knitting, but this yarn definitely is high on my list of recommendations for crocheting. And the colours are just divine and hard to resist. Take a look if you dare…
