In 2006 I felt for a vacation, but there was no-one who could join me. No problem, I decided to just go on my own. After all I had been around as a solo-female-traveler in European cities like Paris, London and Vienna and I had traveled alone in Australia.
Marrakech, Morocco, sounded like a perfect city-trip. Culture, architecture, shopping, nice climate and all those gorgeous riads to stay in! So I booked a flight and picked two riads; five nights in each of the two.
I saw indeed a lot of beautiful things:
I did not feel at ease a lot of the time. Being a scaredy-cat and an introvert doesn’t help when traveling alone. Being a blond woman on her own in Marrakech is not really a plus either. The pushy touts and the looking, hissing and groping of some of the men made me anxious and it made my strolls not always relaxed.
I know that many other travelers, also blond, solo, female travelers like myself, were absolutely not bothered by this and that they had a great time in Marrakech. I guess they have thicker skin than me, or are braver, more assertive, more extraverted, or all of that. So take my experiences for what they are: my experiences. Weigh them, by taking in consideration how you know yourself to be and to react. If you’re anything like me, then don’t go alone to Marrakech. But if you are braver and more outgoing: you will be fine there. And there is a lot to enjoy in Marrakech. I’m not a foodie, but it is known for it’s many cooking-classes and it’s cuisine.
In the next weeks you can expect a series of articles about my time in Marrakech. I’m sure my pictures will inspire you!
Have you been to Marrakech? Did you enjoy it?
Are you any good in solo-traveling? What do you like about it and do you have any tips for other (female) solo-travelers?
