What’s on at the Affordable Art Fair 2014

As I wrote earlier this week, the Affordable Art Fair is back in town. And it sure does not disappoint. I even like this edition better then the one of last May.

Since today is the last day, I will make this post a quick one, with pictures of -some of the- the art that is for sale. At least: that was for sale last friday afternoon. Art works pictured in this post may already have been sold; today’s your last chance to visit the fair and find out for yourself.

When I was there, friday afternoon, the fair was very quiet, just as I hoped. Much more pleasant for browsing and chatting to the gallery owners and to some of the artists that were present!

Anyhow, let me show you what’s on at the Affordable Art Fair 2014 in Singapore.

There is art for the pop-art lovers:

Lots of art works for pet-lovers.

Do you remember the works at the previous AAF that were made out of My Little Ponies? Well, now that artist, Robert Bradford, is represented again, with this dachshund. Want!!!
(For SGD 6500 it’s yours.)

And do you remember the collage art from old maps? That artist, Peter Clark, is represented again as well, with several collaged doggies. (Around SGD 1400)

And there are more doggies and cats for sale.

There is art on unusual surfaces/’canvasses’, like on slates, on metal and on Nepalese paper.

Looking for art that is connected to Singapore? Look no further; you will find it at the Affordable Art Fair Singapore!

Are you an antler-fan like me? Take your pick!

I want all of the above antler art, especially the little statue on the bottom right. That one is too cool for words! It is made by Aninta Boonnotok, SGD 800.

As you may know from my travel articles about India, my feelings about the country are mixed, to say the least. But I adore the colors , advertisements and posters from India! On top of that, I am a ‘more is more’-person. A ‘kitsch’ and ‘camp’ fan.
So it should come as no surprise that this room, filled with the work from Ketna Patel, is my favorite of the whole fair. Those chairs!!!!

I recognized the style and artist from the rickshaw that I stumbled upon in the lobby of hotel New Majestic in Singapore. Supercool!

Talking about rickshaws, what do you think of this one, covered in bras? I love it!
In the same collage you see some other art works that I liked. The mecano-art by Geunho Goh is fun, don’t you think?
And the threaded faces by Stefan Buana are beautiful!

As I told you in previous articles, I am drawn to fabric, 3D elements and mixed media in art. Like here, where spanish artist Mersuka Dopazo uses fabric on/in her paintings. Very pretty.

Or like in this work, by Mayumi Tsuzuki, in which a fabric skirt is giving a 3D effect to a painting in a frame.

And since I came across the art of Jane Perkins I am in love with her work and instantly decided that one day I will buy one of her art works. Or try to create something similar for myself;-), due to a lack of money. Not that I think this is easy or easy to copy; I don’t!

Ofcourse there is much, much more art to be discovered (and bought) at the current fair in Singapore, but at least now you have an idea of what’s on at the Affordable Art Fair 2014.

In my earlier post about the AAF I revealed some embarrassing moments that I had there in May, remember? This time there were some uncomfortable moments again:

• after 10 minutes at the fair, one of the shoulderstraps of my camera bag snapped, causing me to stroll around the next hours trying to keep all my stuff together in the most unhandy way. Have you ever been in a situation like this? Juggling two bags, cameras, lenses, free (thick) art magazines, a water bottle….pfffff.
• there was no artist name given at one of the art works that I liked a lot. I asked one of the women of the gallery. She rapidly spitted out a difficult name, so I asked her to write it down for me. “What a complicated name!”, I said, “but I love her art!”. At which point one of the other women in the booth told me: “She’s the artist herself, you know!” Oops, awkward. Not sure why, actually, but it felt awkward.
• looking around in another booth, taking snaps for this post, the gallery owner practically stormed towards me. “Yes? Can I help you?”, she asked me on a loud tone, while towering over me, making me do a step backwards. It was not so much a question really. It felt more like an accusation and intimidation. As in: “What do you want? Looky, looky, no buying, just snapping?!”. Brrr…. Fortunately many other gallery owners were friendly and accommodating.

Am I exceptionally clumsy? Or overly sensitive? Ok, don’t answer that last question. I know I am;-).
Or do we all have moments and experiences like this from time to time? Please say yes!
