What I've been reading

What I've been reading...
Pimp by Iceberg Slim
Hollow City by Ransom Riggs
The Last Time I Wore A Dress by Daphne Scholinski

I've read lots of books by women in the sex industry. Those might even be my favorite kinds of books. There are lots of misconceptions about these women and I LOVE reading their stories. I read Pimp because I thought it would be interesting to read more from the viewpoint of a male in the sex industry...except I didn't stop to consider the fact that pimps aren't exactly good people. Exploitation of anyone is awful so needless to say I hated this book. Maybe some part of me hoped that pimps weren't awful people but this book just reinforced the fact that they definitely are. It seemed like every other word was "bitch" and he often talks of abusing the women in his life. Subject matter aside, the book was riddled with typos, misspellings and misuse of quotation marks. I may not be the best at punctuation but even I know names don't need quotation marks. Okay, "Iceberg Slim"? Looking for something written by a male in the sex industry? Try Chicken instead.

The Last Time I Wore A Dress was great. It's the story of Daphne Scholinski who at fifteen years old was committed to a mental institution with a diagnosis of Gender Identity Disorder. Her treatment included some obviously ridiculous things such as wearing make-up, swinging her hips while she walked, and wearing dresses. It's a chilling look at the mental health system in the 80s. It's a super quick read that you'll want just keep reading and reading. Highly recommended especially if you're a fan of Girl, Interrupted.

In my last What I've been reading post I declared my love for Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. Immediately after finishing it I started reading the sequel, Hollow City. Uggggh. So good! Hollow City was a seamless sequel. I think that might be the first one I've ever read that complimented the first book so perfectly. Sequels are always scary when you really enjoyed the first book or movie because your expectations are so high. Nah, not this one, I loved every second. Do yourself a favor, go read Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children then read Hollow City. You're welcome.
What have you been reading?
