The Chateau is sorted
Two years ago I took on a project that I knew would be an adventure. A Chateau in the South of France built between the 12th and 16th centuries. I couldn’t resist, after all it had towers and a portcullis! The downside it hadn’t been occupied for 25 years, it had been sabotaged and stripped of everything.
Much thought and discussion was required to sympathetically adapt an old building to modern day requirements such as en-suite bathrooms without looking added on. The brief from my client, “I want my home to look like we are really relaxed even though we have thought hard about it.”
It was with great pleasure last week, that I saw the owners enjoying their home as I walked around writing up a snagging list for the contractors.
The quality of the work is superb as, like many French building teams, the Chateau’s team retained all the old skills and applied them with great care. I’ve come away with a new French vocabulary, even, soil pipe sounds nicer in French. I’ve also learned that world over, contractors will interpret designs and procrastinate if you are not there but being there was not too difficult a requirement.
