This is the first time I don’t go skiing for the winter holidays, and while I thought I’d miss it actually it turned out that relaxing for 2 weeks is awesome. Every holidays season everyone stresses about the things that we need to undertake while off-work, like visiting new cities or skiing for 8 hours so that the holidays become a second job. The sweet doing nothing turns ut to be as fulfilling as having done a trip around the world. So at the end of these holidays there isn’t much to tell instead there are some beautiful images to show of the walks around the small towns around Iseo Lake, and definitely there are a lots of books to recommend. I had made my mission to read all the books related to movies I’ve seen, getting to know the original story and having a chance to meet the lives and thoughts of the characters in the movie. So here is my Must Read list:
Book by Australian author Markus Zusak / Movie directed by Brian Percival with Sophie Nelisse and Geoffrey Rush
Both the book and the movie made me cry, which means that the movie is really good. So good that it actually has captured perfectly the characters, the political scenery, and the intensity of the story. I don’t want to give major spoilers for those who haven’t read or watched the film adaptation. But if you have only watched the movie, the book is a must read to understand the storyline of Hans Hubermann’s life and accordion prior to Liesel’s appearance and also the Major’s wife storyline, which isn’t developed at all in the movie.

Book by author american Audrey Niffenegger / Movie directed by Robert Schwentke with Eric Bana andRachel McAdams
I had watched the movie years ago and didn’t remember many details, so I read the book with a fresh look to the story. Also here the movie is pretty good and follows the storyline even though it has changed a few little things which in the book go to completely in different directions. The main difference is that in the book the time traveler’s wife is more real, makes mistakes and has a love story with her husband’s best friend.
Book by German author Bernhard Schlink / Movie directed by Stephen Daldry with Kate Winslet and Ralph Fiennes
I had loved the movie and this was the book that started my mission of reading all the other ones. The movie had already done a great job portraying the characters in full with Kate Winslet winning an Oscar for playing Hanna Schmitz. The book describes better Hanna’s struggle in prison to learn how to read and better understand her crime while trying to make amends.
Book by author Michael Cunningham / Movie directed by Stephen Daldry with Nicole Kidman, Meryl Streep and Julianne Moore.
While watching the movie some time ago I was at complete loss. I didn’t get the storyline at all. 3 women in 3 different times with one of them being Virginia Woolf. Reading the book helped a little bit but not that much. The key that opens the stories of both the movie and the book is first reading Virginia Woolf’s 1925 book Mrs. Dalloway. So definitely I did the things in the wrong order.
