Untold stories of women in computer science

Computer science is a STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) field that remains overwhelmingly difficult for women to break into.

This isn’t for lack of effort in many areas. At universities, we do a lot of recruiting to try to get more women in the field, at the lower grade levels, we run programs to try to encourage girls to see themselves not just as consumers of technology, but as potential creators!

But one piece that may be missing is helping girls see all the amazing women who have had a part in the development of this field. Do the kids in your life know The story of Ada Lovelace? Hedy Lamarr? Rosalind Franklin? Grace Hopper? Women were central in the early years of computers science and technology development, but those stories are often untold.

You can use this whitehouse.gov resource to share some of these amazing stories with the kids in your life. Let them be inspired, help them see themselves as part of this exciting story!
