10 dishes you should never order on a first date

There are certain dishes that, as much you love them, you should avoid at all costs on a first date if you want it go smoothly. We’ll go over of a few of them.

A first date can be one of the most stressful moments ever. We’re full of doubts, we don’t know how to act, what to say…and things tend to get even more tense when the food arrives. To ensure that everything goes as smooth as silk, we’ll recommend a few dishes you should steer clear of, that because of their smell or because they’re complicated to eat are everything but romantic.

SPAGHETTI. As much as we all fell in love with «Lady and the Tramp» over spaghetti and meat balls in one of the most romantic movie scenes ever, eating spaghetti on your first date is a big risk. The noodles are difficult to wrap around the fork if your not skilled in this area, and they can fall off, splattering all over and staining the brand new shirt you bought just for the occasion, stain your face with tomato sauce…and if on top of that you’re paying more attention to your date than your dish, it may get cold.

HAMBURGUERS. Yes. Although it may not seem like it, eating hamburgers is an art that requires a lot of technique that not all of us have under control. Especially if you adding all the extras: tomato, various sauces, pickles, cheese, onions…The general rule is that hamburgers should be eaten with your hands (as long as its not a silver platter restaurant). And to make sure all the ingredients don’t fall out, and so your hands don’t get messy from the ingredients is a difficult task, on top of all the weird facial expressions you make with every bite you take to be able to fit it all in your mouth. If you go to a fast food hamburger joint, go for chicken nuggets or salad.

SOUP. The same as with spaghetti, eating soup and maintaining the romantic ambiance is complicated. Slurps, splattering liquid, too many spoonfuls, if it’s hot you have to blow on it…If you can, opt for a different appetizer.

If you’re looking to have a good time while keeping the mood light, fun and natural, don’t be shy, order what you want

SPICES. Although salads are a great option, make sure they’re made with large-leaf lettuce. If they’re small leaves or they’re seasoned with spices like parsley or basil, you run the risk of getting it stuck in your teeth. The same goes for any dish seasoned with spices with this color, like pesto. There’s nothing less attractive than smiling at your date only to see him signaling that you’ve got something in your teeth.

GARLIC AND ONION. And if spices in general are anti-romantic, what’s to say of these bulbs that add flavor to many dishes, that when eaten raw, leave you with bad breath enough to scare off even the most courageous lovers. So, try to avoid dishes that are heavy in both onions and garlic, or with lots of raw garlic, that can provoke stomachaches on top of the unpleasant odor, leaving you with a bad taste in your mouth, literally.

SPICY. Apart from being difficult to digest, they cause you to drink lots of liquids (which means you’ll have to make many trips to the bathroom) and, most of all, the weird faces you make if it’s too spicy. Although if both you and your date are spicy food lovers, there’s nothing more fun than seeing who can take the most spiciness.

FISH. You can be a big fan of grilled gilt-head bream or hake, but if you’re not careful and don’t pay close attention to how you cut the fish, the bones can become your worst enemy. Choking on one can be, apart from dangerous, a complete disaster: you cough, your face gets flushed, you tear up, makeup smears…If you want fish, go for blue fish that usually doesn’t have many bones, if any at all.

FRIED CHICKEN. It’s very tasty and easily attainable, but what happens when the chicken wing gets stuck between your teeth and you start to pick at it as if your life depended on getting it out? The consequences can be disastrous, so fried chicken, out.

ICE CREAM CONE. One of the most delicious desserts, but also one of the most difficult to eat. It melts quickly and your hands get messy and sticky. There’s no elegant way to eat an ice cream cone. So, if there’s the option to order it in a cup, do it.

SUSHI WITH CHOPSTICKS. Try to avoid dishes that require chopsticks at all costs. It may be a lot of fun to use chopsticks at a restaurant with your girlfriends, but on your first date, it may not turn out so hot. You could stain your clothes, stain your date’s clothes, the food could fall to the floor, or simply end up asking for a fork.

As you can see, there’s a long list. So if what you’re looking for is to have a good time and keep the mood light, fun and natural, don’t be shy, order what you want, and most of all, enjoy your meal and your company to the fullest!
