Suzy Menkes Leaves The New York Times For Vogue International

In a shock announcement this morning, news has broke that longtime International Herald Tribune/New York Times fashion critic Suzy Menkes has resigned to join Vogue as an international editor. It will see her report across the international Vogue websites including Britain, France, Spain, Russia, Japan, Germany and China but not for the US site, and will undoubtedly see her writing for the magazines too.

Menkes was instrumental in the International Herald Tribune’s Luxury Conference and her new role will see her working on similar projects, as she will now be responsible for helping to organise a conference held by Conde Nast International.

“I am grateful to have spent 25 years at the International Herald Tribune – a newspaper where I had unstinting support in being able to express myself freely and honestly,” she said in a release. “I feel this is the perfect time to embrace a new challenge in the digital age.”

Conde Nast International chairman and CEO Jonathan Newhouse naturally waxed lyrical about her joining the Vogue family. “Suzy Menkes is a unique talent, with superb judgment about fashion and keen insight into the business behind it. She is hugely influential and respected,” he said in a statement. “Her contribution will bring even greater quality and authority to the Vogue brand.”

Her decision to go purely digital isn’t entirely surprising. Last year she told Fern Mallis that, “I’m 100% in favour of anything to do with the Internet,” but saying that, I don’t think anyone was expecting her to jump ship quite so soon. And it comes at an interesting time at the New York Times because reporter Eric Wilson left the newspaper last year to join InStyle and earlier this year Cathy Horyn announced her retirement.

It’ll be interesting to see who comes on board to replace her. John Koblin and Mathew Schneier have already jumped on board to replace Wilson and Horyn but Style.com’s Nicole Phelps and Vanessa Friedman are the names currently in the hat for Menkes’ job.
