Ko and Co, Korean/Mexican comes to Sydney… FINALLY

The tacos!

Korean style quesadillas filled with kimchi.

Hell yeah Korean fried chicken sliders!

Eat some fried chicken and wash it down with a cold pressed apple juice cocktail. Don’t mind if I do.

My bad, I forget which sliders these are! But they were good… And messy.

The bar with a small, but tasty, selection of cocktails.

The drink menu – try the yuzu margarita.

Cocktails served in Hite glasses.

I don’t know why Korean and Mexican food goes so well together but it does. After being exposed to it in LA with the Kogi BBQ trucks, I was so happy to hear about a new Korean Mexican place opening up in Surry Hills.

Ko and Co is owned by husband and wife team Frank and Sarah Lin and Jae Jung. Frank and Sarah used to own a busy little takeaway shop in the CBD but got sick of the daily grind (I hear you!). After Mexican food took off a few years ago (thankfully, but I wish there were more like El Loco) and seeing Korean food become more mainstream, the couple decided it was the right time for Sydney to experience Korean/Mexican food. Adding experienced cocktail guy Jae to the mix – because tacos and margaritas together make total sense – they were nearly ready to set up shop.

After getting Jae on board, they jumped on a plane to LA with my good friend Derek (who was just along for the ride) and spent a few days in a stupidly large SUV driving around LA trying as many food trucks and burger stands as they could – which sounds like a condensed version of my 2 month trip to LA. After a few tweaks to their vision, menu and drinks, Ko and Co was ready!

On the menu you’ve got your Mexican regulars – tacos and quesadillas but with a Korean twist – either kimchi in the quesadilla or meats prepared in a Korean way. The most popular dish is the fried chicken which is boneless, delightfully crispy and gluten free (!!!) – I’ve tried this dish and can 100% vouch for it! Make sure you order one of their cocktails – the yuzu margarita or cold pressed apple with soju were my favourites.

Ko and Co is a great place to start the night and I know I’ll be back for my Korean/Mexican fix.
