Why so casual?

I was flicking through the May 2014 Tatler magazine while at the hairdressers this week and one writer (I’m so sorry I cannot remember who) commented in the party section on the hideous term – Dress Code: Smart Casual. She rightly questioned what is the point of the hybrid. Women, let alone men wear hats everyday and, unless you’re a business man working in the city, men do not even wear a suit any more – not to mention one with a waistcoat. As a nation why have we come not to care about how we dress?

On countless occasions a friend or my mum has said ‘you’re very dressed up’ for going out for supper. But I disagree, isn’t it lovely to dress up when going out somewhere? I see supper in a restaurant as a treat – why wouldn’t I make an effort? The number of times I have seen people wondering the streets in Uggs and shorts I think is unacceptable. Uggs are great as slippers and when it is snowing, while shorts just look better in a hot country and at the beach. I can remember absolutely loving the The Gucci A/W 2011 show where hats and necks scarves were prominent features – it was just so sophisticated and elegant. Something essentially missing from today’s dress code.

So when you next write an invitation for your fabulous party why not just put SMART..or even black tie. As far as I know most girls enjoy an excuse to dress up and make an effort – putting on a new dress or heels is one of the best confidence boosters. Equally isn’t it wonderful when you have some truly gorgeous photos to remember a birthday or dinner party by?

Norman Parkinson was a talented photographer and his photo above, along with countless others, perfectly captured feminine elegance – especially during the 1950′s. I think I should have been born then, there is nothing more romantic than a neat little waist and a full skirt. To think women and men used to have driving gloves too! Maybe one day we will again…
