BEAUTY | Perm Rods on Straight Natural Hair

Even though I’ve been wearing my hair straight for the past few weeks, I can’t wear bone-straight hair all the time. I get bored! So I’ve been using perm rods to get a bit of curl. I usually use the perm rods after my hair has been straight for about a week and I’ve gotten tired of wrapping or pin-curling it.

To get this look, I first moisturized my hair with Karen’s Body Beautiful Sweet Ambrosia Leave-in Conditioner, focusing on my ends. Then I parted a section down the middle of my head and started setting my hair in the perm rods (going back towards my nape). I used the Coconut & Hibiscus Frizz-Free Mousse by SheaMoisture to set the curls. It doesn’t make my hair revert, it smells nice, and it gives a good amount of hold. But after a couple days, the curls drop a bit, so when I want tighter curls, I use aloe vera gel instead of the SheaMoisture mousse.

It only takes me about 15-20 minutes to set my hair. I usually sleep in the rollers overnight. Before I take the rollers out, I rub some Oyin Sugar Berries Pomade on my fingers. This allows my hair to get some added moisture as I take out the rollers, and I can shape my hair with the pomade at the same time.

At nights I do one of two things: if I want looser curls the next morning, I wear my hair in a “pineapple,” and if I want tighter curls, I’ll pincurl my hair down. After about three days, I usually end up roller setting my hair again.

It’s time for me to wash my hair again, so I’m going to do a “curl experiment” with flexi-rods. I tried flexi-rods really early in my “healthy hair journey,” but I never got the look I wanted. So I’m going to try again on blown out hair and see what happens. I’m using

this “How to Cheat a Flexi Rod Set” YouTube video by Naptural85 as inspiration. There’s some drool-worthy hair in that video. I’ll let you know how my attempt turns out!
