FIRSTUP.SE MIX001: FINNS DET GÄRIS?
"Finns Det Gäris?" Translated, "Are there any girls?" is a frequently asked question in urban Swedish music these days. And the answer to this is: Yes, plenty. In fact, they are more than in many years BUT, even if Sweden is so good at music export and (on paper) one of the most gender equal countries in the whole wide world these girls are sadly left out in the general discussion when it comes to Swedish hip hop or music with an urban connection. Females are reduced to female rappers. Female producers. Female musicians. Always existing as the opposite to their male ditto. I can't remember when I heard a discussion about a lyric written by a female rapper. A discussion about a production made by a female musician. I never heard of them being a natural part of the discourse, the general discussion, being part of the norm. The only thing I've heard is "insert name is FEMALE". And yes, it makes me tired and sad, it's 2013 it's time to level the fuck up.
This mix or mixtape or whatever you wanna call it is the first one I've made since in like 15 years. Back then I was the self proclaimed queen of the c-90 and intricate collages as covers. The purpose with this is to showcase the massive talent Sweden sits on and mind you, this is just a tiny tiny slice of the giant cake this country actually got. Almost every tune is fresh and new (even if some old gold has managed to sneak in as well). Listen to the music. Buy it. Download what is free. Spread the word. Talk about it. To all so called music journalists. Please, if you gonna sport your so called gender equal analysis, well, it's time to start seeing past gender, to include all these musicians in your texts and radio shows, not reducing them to their gender, as the other.
