10 Signs That You Are Married To An Interior Designer

Interior designers are mind readers— after one conversation with a new client they have an innate skill of knowing what their client wants. We thought it would be neat to hop inside the creative, yet complicated, mind of an interior designer and see what it’s like in there. Better yet, let’s see what it is like to live with one.

Some people bring work home with them, but for interior designers (and interior decorators), this can seem like an understatement. The personal nuances that make a great interior designer don’t get left at the office, rather they are life skills and personality traits that follow them in every facet of life. While we don’t want to stereotype the workings of these amazing ‘design minds’, we thought it fun to reflect on what it might be like to live with these creatives.

Are you married to an interior designer? If so, then you know what we are talking about. Here are 10 signs that you are married to one of these ambitious and originative individuals:

1 ) Your Closet Is Arranged By Color

When you look in your closet, do you see a perfectly planned color palette whose shades give an ombre effect to the clothes hanging in there? Well, being married to an interior designer often results in this closet scenario.

Interior designers tend to keep things organized, but in a different way than most. As opposed to sorting clothes — or anything else in your home — by size or type, they most likely sort by color (or pattern and texture).

Having your clothes arranged by color, however, is not necessarily a bad thing. You will always know where to look for your favorite blue shirt or hot pink sweater.

2) Type A Personality

Ah, yes, those Type A personalities are fun to live with aren’t they? Everything has a place and every place has a purpose.

These high-end personalities have received a bad rap. The truth is being a Type A can get you far in life—very far. Type A’s are go-getters; they are organized and for the most part they are very successful individuals who know what they want (and often get what they want).

Who doesn’t desire to be like that? Indeed, Type A personalities are the ones to look up to and perhaps imitate, despite the fact that they may be tightly wound at times and difficult to live with.

3) Perfectionism Reigns Supreme

In addition to the Type A personality, your designer spouse is a perfectionist.

However, this perfectionism is what makes them succeed in the interior design world. Of course, clients are happy when their designer gives them a home that is utter perfection.

On the other hand, it can be tough at times to live with these perfectionists— and we all know that home life does not always run as seamlessly as our work lives, especially when kids and family life are involved. This is where interior design perfectionism can cause aggravation and inspire comments like, “Don’t sit on the couch with your shoes on, are you crazy!?”

4) Designers Are Intuitive

As we mentioned above, interior designers are mind readers; they are intuitive individuals who know how to read people.

This is a very good trait to have in order to be successful in the interior design world. Who wants to hire an interior designer who can’t get to the heart of the matter and figure out what you want?

Intuition is not something that is taught in design school, rather it is a personality trait that is imbedded in the best interior designers. And this trait, of course, follows the designer through the door at the end of the day. So when your design spouse asks you what’s wrong, don’t bother to lie and say, ‘nothing’—their intuition knows better.

5) Designers Have A Strong Ego-But In A Good Way

Interior designers are confident people, although not in a bad way. They are just secure in their skills and knowledge of interior design—they know what works and what doesn’t. You may, however, have a difficult time winning an argument, particularly when the argument is about the couch or chair you want in your living room.

As a spouse, you have learned that they know best, and your opinion counts, but not quite as much as theirs. After all – they are the professional designer.

These strong-willed individuals will have difficulty letting someone else over-ride their decision— especially if it’s in their own home.

6) Did I Walk Into The Wrong House?

Being married to an interior designer definitely has its perks – excitement – for one. This is particularly true when it comes to walking into your own home.

Many designers have a knack (read compulsion) for changing furniture, wall decor, seating arrangements, and the wall color in their own home quite often.

While this does help keep excitement in the home, it can be daunting to come home from a long day, waiting to sit in your favorite recliner, only to find it replaced with your spouse’s newest project.

7) Coffee Tables Are Not For Feet (Or Coffee)

We are sure that your home has a coffee table, which you would love to prop your feet up on, or even sit your coffee cup upon.

Unfortunately, because you are married to an interior designer, those two activities – as well as many others – are strictly forbidden from occurring on top of your coffee table.

That is because coffee tables in the homes of interior designers are used to display decorative items and serve — in many cases — no other purpose except one of beauty.

8) Your Bed is Filled With Pillows

When you walk into your bedroom, is your bed piled so high with pillows you cannot even see the bed? Then you are probably married to an interior designer.

Not only will your bed be piled high with pillows, but at night, you will need to remove them before attempting to go to sleep, as these particular pillows are not for sleeping on. In fact, interior designers use pillows as an accessory, essentially for looks — not use.

People in this career tend to have an obsession with throw pillows, bed pillows, neck rolls, and fabric – lots and lots of fabric.

9) To -Do Lists Are A Must

There is no way a day goes by without a to-do list, and this doesn’t just occur in the professional life of an interior designer. In fact, most interior designers are so used to being busy that without a to-do list at home, they could go stir-crazy.

Don’t worry, most times these to-do lists do not end up as a honey-do list, but a list for themselves to complete. They tend to feel the need to fix things in the home, and be sure that no stone is left unturned — or that no job is left undone — at the end of the day.

While this may be a little frustrating as a spouse who just wants to sit and relax with the one they love, it is definitely good for clients who want the perfect room.

10) Their Sleep Cycle Is Short

As we said, interior designers tend to be busy, very busy, and resting for long periods of time is not an option. With so much on their to-do lists, interior designers tend to run on a short sleep cycle.

In fact, don’t be surprised if your spouse is the last one to bed every night, but yet, somehow manages to be the first one out of bed in the morning — even on the weekends.

Taking a break for an interior designer is difficult. As creative as an individual as your spouse is, their mind continues even when they should be resting— new ideas and new items for their to-do list keep piling up, and the only way to get it done is to get out of bed and do it.

Perhaps you will want to invest in twin beds—it may minimize your sleep disturbances.

Creative, talented, dedicated, inspired, and colorful – these are all words that you can use to describe not just what your spouse at work, but your spouse in life.

Being an interior designer is not just a job, it’s a way of life. Interior designers have the inability to separate themselves at home from themselves at work – but in a good way.

After all, isn’t it fun being married to someone who is inspired, creative, talented, dedicated, and colorful? Share your stories about being married to an interior designer, and know that you are not alone in a crazy, yet fun, fabric-filled life.
