Original Wedge Shaped Block Overlooking the Pacific: Queenscliff House in Sydney

The Queenscliff House in Sydney, Australia draws attention due to its vantage location on the edge of a cliff 100 meters above the ocean. Utz Sanby Architects envisioned a modern residence like a wedge shaped block between two close neighboring buildings. The thermally-efficient project features structural walls, high-level glazing and a special roof form which facilitates living spaces with a good level of privacy and expansive views. Louvers and ceiling fans are employed for an abundance of natural light and an optimum ventilation in all the rooms.

The functionally-planned layout encourages interaction and healthy modern living: “Large fin walls divide the separate functions of entrance and circulation from the living areas and garden, providing privacy and structural support for the upper level bedroom wing. The main living areas of the house are designed to link the garden space with the ocean and to take advantage of the geometry of the block, which widens towards the cliff edge.” Sustainable features of the residence include hydronic under-floor heating, dark floor tiles in the living area to absorb warmth and sub-floor rainwater tanks.
