Around the House: Updated Living Room.

Blame it on Spring cleaning or whatever you will, I've been decorating our home like mad! I shared a while ago what our living room looked like, a month after moving in. I loved how minimal it was because that made it easy to keep clean, but something/everything about it felt sterile and cold to me. Also, that plant died lol! I kept switching around our coffee tables (we had about five different tables but two living room areas) and I just couldn't figure out what belonged where : / I always have a harder time whilst decorating my own home than I do other peoples, because maybe I'm just too picky when it's something I have to live in every day?

I then ordered a new rug that I intended to put in our family room (which I haven't shared yet) but with gray couches it just looked plain horrid! So I tossed the cowhide rug into our family room and brought the new orange rug into this room and voila!

Having more decor on the wall makes the room feel cozier too, but I really think the biggest difference is the rug! Also, these pictures were taken across two different days so if you noticed two different planter baskets it's because I finally found one that fits this plant : )

And if you are in search of a beautiful, affordable area rug I suggest looking at places like Overstock, Rugs USA, or Floors USA. Rugs are one of those things that can easily makeover an entire space so it's worth spending money on....

Also, a couple tips when shopping for an area rug:

1. Make sure the pile (thickness of rug) is right for the space you plan to put it. For example a shaggy rug (high pile) would be impossible to keep clean in a space like your dining room. So search for a low pile or outdoor rug for high traffic areas and high pile rugs for a space like your formal living room or bedroom.

2. An area rug should be large enough for the front legs of sofas and all legs of coffee tables to rest on the rug without looking too cramped. Area rugs under a dining table and chairs should be at least large enough to fit completely under all chair legs when pushed in. Ideally, if you can afford a large enough rug to fit all chair legs when pulled out, that would be even better : )

3. As I learned with my rug shopping experience, a warm toned rug (reds, oranges, yellows) works better with warm toned furniture (tan, brown, beige) and cool toned rugs (purples, greens, blues) usually look better with cool toned furniture (gray, black). There are exceptions to this rule, especially if you have colorful furniture (i.e. a blue sofa could look beautiful with a rusty orange area rug) but in my case, we have this tan sofa or our gray sofas and this rug compliments our tan sofa significantly more than it did in our family room with gray sofas.

Hope that helps and happy decorating!
