On Teaching, Doing, and a New Published Article

Lately, I’ve drifted from my writing. I have so many stories stored in my mind, ready to escape through the tips of my fingers to be written and rewritten and published on this blog. I have photos to pour through and reminisce over the moments they’ve captured as I organize them into photo essays. But I have a full time job and grad school and seemingly infinite work from both. So as I teach students how to get better at reading and writing and learn how to improve in my practice of doing this, I’ve let my own writing slide.

Then, this week, I got my hands on a copy of the latest issue of Big Island Traveler magazine which includes an article I wrote back in October about a local honey producer called Big Island Bees. Upon seeing my first print article and first published photos, I let out a sigh of joy. I was reminded of the persistence it’s taken to get to the point where I could see my work appear on the glossy pages of a travel magazine. I was reminded of how much persistence it’s taken over the years to write hundreds of posts on this blog; stories that make me smile (and sometimes cringe) as I look back at both my writing and my travels. It reminded me that I can’t let go of my writing during a busy phase, even if it’s just one sentence a day, or one blog post a month, or one article every several months. I will teach, learn, and do.
