Hey, everyone!
Today marks a very special collaboration with a brand that I have been following since my early middle-school days: Dr. Martens!
This season, Doc Martens' campaign revolves around the idea of what it means to Stand for Something. The LB x Dr. Martens team asked us collaborators to think of what it meant to us to stand for something; what sense of empowerment we felt, and that was emphasized, by our Dr. Martens shoes!
Being that I am mixed race, growing up with two very distinct cultural backgrounds left me feeling as though I was stuck somewhere between; I was confused as to whether I could identify and belong to one cultural identity more than the other? Did I have to choose? This feeling of vulnerability from being without, for me, gave me the motivation needed to pursue and create a place where I had a sense of within. This is where I began to forge my own individuality, drawing from both of my cultural backgrounds (Chinese and Irish), as well as pursuing my own interests in fashion, the Arts, and pop-culture, to establish something that I could identify with completely. I am obviously still in the process of developing this 'space' for myself. Ultimately, I stand for the ability and right that every individual has, to draw from--and drift between--a multitude of ethnic backgrounds, cultures, lifestyles, and so on; I stand for being able to confidently pursue and establish a highly customized physical and psychological space where we feel that we belong--no matter how rebellious or 'strange' this measure of individualism may seem to those around us. For me, a large part of this place comes from my experimentation through fashion and style; and my Dr. Martens feel like an empowering stepping stone in my journey to this place. After all, WE are the only ones who have the right to decide what is RIGHT for us!
