DIY Basket Christmas Tree Skirt

Have you ever had a dream? Specifically a dream about having the perfect decorative piece for your home. I’m talking about the one thing that would make the room complete. Or the one simple thing that would be ideal…if you could only find it.

I’m referring to the absolute…without a doubt…best tree skirt for my Christmas tree. I’ve wished and dreamed about it for years.

Anywhere you look, whether it’s a magazine or Pinterest, there are beautifully decorated trees in baskets or gorgeous hand painted planters. And I want that…

The problem is that my tree is an artificial 12 ft. slim tree. It’s the right choice for my room, because of the 20 ft ceiling and the size of the corner that it has to sit in, but the metal stand is very large. It measures 2 ft x 2 ft from corner to corner. There is also only about a 14 inch clearance from the bottom of the branches to the floor. Do you know how hard it is to find a basket in those measurements?…at a good price?

So over the years, I left it bare. In fact, here’s my confession from last year when I made a DIY burlap skirt

Usually, my Christmas tree is naked below the waist. Yes…I normally go skirt-less when it comes to my Christmas tree.

But this year, I decided enough was enough. If I can’t buy it, I’ll make it!

So without further adieu, let me introduce you to the dream Christmas tree skirt. The Christmas tree skirt beyond all others…

Love, love, love! It’s perfect with my Black, White & Burlap themed decorations. I’ve added strands of burlap as my ornament hangers and burlap ribbon on the gifts.

Luckily, I had a cardboard box in the garage that opened to the exact size I needed to cover the metal tree stand. I did have to use a box cutter to trim the height to about 13″. I wanted it to fit perfectly under the tree, but allow the branches to fall over the top, to hide the interior of the box. The bottom of the box is also cut out. You essentially have a box with no top or bottom. For the outside, I simply hot glued rope around the box in layers.

As I was working on it, I was a little worried that the rope wouldn’t bend at the corners of the box, but it worked great. It did take a lot of rope. In fact, it took 6 rolls of 50 ft packages of rope, which also make the box very heavy when it was done. But its fabulous.

Doesn’t it look amazing? The size of the basket is perfect for the tree.

Now, I’m just wondering what took me so long to create this great DIY Basket Christmas Tree Skirt. It was such an easy project and I’ll be able to use it each year. Can it get any better?!

If you have a need for a “dream” tree skirt, then you may want to try creating your own DIY basket. It’s a high-end look with simple supplies and it can be finished in an hour or so. Sometimes dreams do come true…
