Book Club #9: The Beautiful Hunger Games

Hello there, best friends! By now you should know that I'm doing an online book club, right here on the blog. I do it because I feel like people need to read more novels, read for pleasure. Since this is a month dedicated to give you advice, I chose to do something extra special and write quick reviews of two series of books, you know, so you can have an idea before embarking onto the whole saga. I chose to review The Hunger Games trilogy, by Suzanne Collins and; the series that includes Beautiful Creatures (I think it's called The Caster Chronicles), by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl.

// ¡Hola mejores amigos!
I'll start with The Caster Chronicles; the first title is Beautiful Creatures and I wanted to read it because I heard a big movie about it was coming out. I have a strange relationship with this saga; the things that I like, I love but; the parts that I dislike, I despise. It tells the story of Ethan Wate, a guy living in Gatlin, South Carolina, who dreams about leaving that town for good. That, of course, until he meets Lena Duchanes, a mysterious girl with magic powers (people like her are called casters in the books) and falls for her, hardcore. Then he kind of sacrifices all of his previous dreams and goals to be with her.

I like Ethan, Ethan is a cool character EXCEPT when he's in love with Lena, and I do mean in LOVE. Sure, it's nice to read about a love story so powerful that nothing can tear it apart but I also feel like I've seen it before, so many times. All the characters in the books are really cool but they sort of fall apart once they are in love and, during the whole saga, almost everybody finds love. Oh, and Lena is kind of a cliché of the weird, sensitive girl who wears Converse all the time. It's a good moment to say that, although the movie wasn't a success, the characters are way cooler in it, Lena included.

Aside from that, I really enjoyed this series of novels, the setting is really cool, the characters are nicely developed, there are amazing twists and you really never expect what's going to happen next (except, obviously, for the relationship between Ethan and Lena). If you're a big fan of Twilight, then this is for you and if you're not (like me) then it's a perfectly good (and predictable) epic teenage love story featuring cool powers and a daily dose of Southern accent and culture, y'all.

The Hunger Games is one of the most successful sagas in present-day literature and cinema for a good reason; after seeing an excellent first movie, I wanted to know just how much better the books were and, surprisingly, they're kind of even. Just in case you've lived under a rock for the past few years, The Hunger Games happens in the future, where a war has unified the whole population into a super continent called Panem, divided in 12 districts. Every year, a reality show happens where they choose a boy and a girl from each district to compete in a bloody colosseum-like fight with only one survivor.

The main character is Katniss Everdeen and everything is told from her perspective as one of the chosen ones to compete in the hunger games. She, unintentionally, generates a spark that causes a revolution amongst Panem. Her presence in the arena is something that has never been seen before and, wishing it or not, that makes her the revolution's icon. I devoured these books in a matter of days, the longer I took to read one was something like 3 days. They're just that addictive. I very much like but also frightened that they don't seem farfetched from reality, they left me with tough moral debates and I think, at the end of the day, that's good because they caused a reaction, art's golden rule.

Like every other teenage novel, sometimes they have unnecessary love story moments but I feel like the main goal is achieved. They tell a possible scenario to which we might be heading towards, all in a very easy to understand language. They're strong and bloody when needed and, honestly, I have nothing really bad to say about them. My favorite is the middle novel, Catching Fire, but all three are in a pretty good level within my taste table. I think it's one of those sagas like Harry Potter or Lord of The Rings, you can't avoid being exposed to them and, they're definitely worth reading (the movies are pretty good as well).
