SmoothSkin Gold – IPL Permanent hair removal system

Hello ladies, today I have a special guest taking the reins at Just Nice Things. I hope you will make her feel very welcome particularly as her name is Helen too.

Helen is a really good friend of mine whom I’ve known for YEARS and she is behind a newly launched YouTube channel called Casual Beauty UK.

Helen has kindly agreed to trial a new at home IPL device called SmoothSkin Gold and post her progress over the next 12 weeks on Just Nice Things so if you are intrigued, read on and don’t forget to subscribe to updates through Bloglovin’ and of course, Helen’s YouTube channel. Thank you, Helen!

Over the past few years hormones and the natural ageing process has caused me to sprout some rather unsettling facial hairs. I’m not talking hair of freak show bearded lady proportions, just a couple of rather thick dark hairs where there should be no hairs at all.

Other people assure me that they really aren’t that bad and tare barely visible but I *know* they are there. Every time I look in a mirror I see them and every time I touch my face I can feel them. This has led to a rather ridiculous, time-wasting ritual of daily skin examination and hair plucking which I’d really like to stop ASAP.

I’d previously looked into professional permanent hair removal methods but they are scarily expensive. “How much to blast a small area of my face with a laser? That’s the price per session for 12 sessions? I’ll pass, thanks.”

Well good things come in small(ish) packages so when I was asked to try the new at home SmoothSkin Gold IPL* hair reduction device for the face and body, I didn’t need much arm-twisting.

Now don’t get me wrong. The SmoothSkin Gold IPL is not cheap, but when you consider the fact that you can use it on your face and body and then compare the price to what you’d pay to a salon, you soon realise the colossal savings you will make. Add to that the cost of travel (car or public) to take you to your regular appointments and the time clocked up – quite frankly you’d be mad not to get one of these.

Let’s take a closer look. The SmoothSkin IPL comes in a neat little box and is a sleek and shiny spaceage looking gadget that is simple to use and doesn’t require any assembling. You can see exactly why in my very short video:

Once it’s plugged in, you hold the head over your skin, press the button and with a flash and a pop the area is treated. It really is that simple.

So how did I get on for the first session?

As this was my first time using the product I read the instruction book cover-to-cover. This is essential to make sure you get the best results from your machine and don’t cause your skin any damage through mis-use.

As with any new skin product I needed to do a patch test 24 hours before beginning treatment, which was useful to help me decide if I should use the regular or gentle setting (gentle definitely gentle). There is no need for gel and the SmoothSkin Gold is packed with 20,000 flashes, which apparently means can treat your body with this device for up to six years.

It also has a special Detect and Set feature, which automatically selects the right setting for you giving an accurate personalised treatment so there is no need to stop and change settings. The device is suitable for all but the darkest skin tones but not recommended for use on red, grey or very light hair.

I’m not going to lie – there is a pop of pain with each flash of the button but this fades after a couple of seconds and is replaced with a hot tingling feeling that soon passes (I say ‘pain’ but it’s really more of a dull thud and it’s more the surprise that gets you more than the actual sensation). You are supposed to avoid bright sunlight after treatment so I am carrying out my treatments in the evenings before bed.

The only drawback as far as I am concerned is that the treatment has to be carried out on shaved skin, which means no plucking, threading or waxing before, during or after the treatment. In order for the treatment to be effective the root of the hair needs to be in the hair follicle or the treatment won’t work. (But then I am trying to break myself of the plucking cycle so why the bloody hell am I complaining any way?) I will report back after my next session. I’ve got to say, I’m really looking forward to being facial hair-free in 11 weeks time!

SmoothSkin Gold IPL is available from Boots priced at £299. For more information on SmoothSkin Gold, visit www.smoothskin.co.uk.
