On Trend: A Slight Slip Off The Shoulder

Are you prepared to bare those shoulders? And how low are you willing to go? One of the strongest growing trends of the summer is the off-the-shoulder top, a retro classic that pays tribute to the casual styles of the 1980s/90s and runs as deep as the classic Crinoline styles of the 1860s. Today’s shoulder slip is varied in style and plunge. Some take a gentle dip off the curve of a shoulder while others are voluminous, falling drastically low on the upper arm.

This season’s burgeoning style has existed as a romantic variation on the ladies blouse for generations but designers have embraced it with more vigor the last two spring seasons. Designer John Galliano explored the style in his SS2013 collection, while Catherine Malandrino created a sophisticated French off-the-shoulder look for her SS2014 collection. Street style has taken the runway look and expanded upon it with personality and a casual grace that is reminiscent of the nineties off-the-shoulder queen, Lisa Bonet.

How ever which way you wear the look, be it subtle or brave, it is certainly romantic and shouldn’t be clouded with an excessive amount of necklaces or jewellery. Pare it down as simply as possible. It’s a perfect fashion scenario in which you can flaunt those golden summer shoulders. Whether you’re pairing the off-the-shoulder top with distressed denim or a high-waisted circle skirt, the look is chic and cool, so let that strap slip.
