Another Kiwi Woman’s Style – Angela

I’m so excited to introduce to you today a very sweet, lovely blogger from the deep south of NZ (Dunedin)! Angela @ Tall, Short, Tiny & and Pickle has taken a really interesting angle with her interview and focused on her top tips for breast feeding mums. A post I wish I could have read a few years back! Enjoy…

1. Tell us a little about yourself?
I’m a stay-at-home mama of two rascally little boys, aged 3.5 years and 16 months. I love to cook (and eat!), read and travel; my husband and I lived in the UK for almost three years before returning to New Zealand a few months prior to the birth of our first baby. My days are spent chasing, playing, nursing, and cuddling, and I love it.

2. How would you describe your style? Does this change with the seasons?
At the moment, I’d say my style is very much “casual”. I tend to stick to jeans and flats, or shorts and jandals (flip flops!), but occasionally, I’ll wear a skirt or dress – even if we’re just going to kindy or staying at home. My main criteria for dressing is how easily I can breastfeed discreetly in public, so I tend to wear layers, with either a long tank or a long-sleeved tee under a loose t-shirt.

3. What tips and tricks to you employee to suit your shape/size/lifestyle that we may be able to copy? E.g. showing wrists to make your arms look longer, etc.
As above, the biggest considerations for me are how easily I can get down on the floor and play with my boys, as well as how easily I can nurse our baby. My tips for dressing as a breastfeeding mother are:

  • invest in a couple of really good nursing bras – ones that make you feel pretty as well as do their job;
  • don’t rush out and spend heaps on nursing clothes – a couple of pretty nursing tops will make you feel great if you’re out and need to nurse discreetly;
  • otherwise see what tees you have in your wardrobe that can be layered, then buy a few cheap tanks or long-sleeve tops that you can pull down underneath (these can be relegated to the “painting clothes” pile when the necks are stretched beyond repair);
  • conversely, keep some clothes aside and don’t nurse in them, because trust me – by the time you’ve finished breastfeeding, you’ll be sick of the sight of everything!
  • be prepared to sacrifice style for comfort (and be prepared for there to be food and snot on everything!); and
  • if you’re dressing for a fancy function, a dress with a crossover top is a good idea – for subtle feeding at the event, or for quick “access” if you’re called home to a sad baby (see example above).

4. How do you learn or discover new things about style, fashion and trends? Favourite websites, stores, magazines or other sources.
I tend to flick through fashion magazines like InStyle and Vogue while I’m in the checkout line at the supermarket, but often find the clothes featured are well out of my budget. I also like to check out what lovely, real people participating in Wardrobe Wednesday are wearing, but because of my current lifestyle, I don’t follow fashions as much as I’d like to!

Once I’m no longer breastfeeding, I think I’m due a big wardrobe over-haul, so will be stalking blogs and Pinterest like mad.

5. If the readers could buy just one item to enhance, modernise or update their wardrobe right now – what would you recommend?
I’m a big fan of classic pieces, rather than fad items, and really do believe that it’s better to spend a bit more on one item that will still be stylish in ten years, than to spend the equivalent on a whole lot of items that will be dated in three months time.
