Eve Arnold, ‘Marilyn Monroe Reading Ulysses’, Long Island, 1954. “She had loved him better than he knew. Light-hearted deceiver and fickle like all his sex he would never understand what he had meant to her and for an instant there was in the blue eyes a quick stinging of tears.” -Ulysses, James Joyce I’m not going to do an outfit of the day today because I was too busy taking a midterm on James Joyce’s “Ulysses” which went surprisingly well. While the text certainly has some beautiful language and descriptions, I feel like much of it is unnecessarily convoluted with references that are impossible to fully understand (unless you are a Dubliner living in 1904!) One thing I definitely can relate is the representation of unrequited love in the novel– while I have a boyfriend now, for the first 18 years of my life I was always the ugly best friend. I always remember that time as a blessing in disguise because now I understand the importance of handling the feelings of other people with tact. Asking someone out definitely takes a lot of courage! Wore a tutu and red nailpolish in the spirit of Valentine’s Day, and bought myself a cupcake to enjoy while I’m studying French later. On library walk (the center of campus at UCSD) they were handing out free heart-shaped balloons and I was so excited to receive one but then the string came loose and it flew up into the Eucalyptus trees… What are your plans for Valentine’s day? Are you going to spend it on a romantic date night with your significant others or ladies night in with cupcakes and champagne (like me)? XX Kathryn
