Dressing to Impress 101

This post is by this month's fashion contributor Rebecca Watts.
Dressing to impress is an art form. You may want to look great for a special event or night out, or better yet, you want to look your best just because - you know you really don’t need an excuse to want to look on point with your outfit. Here, I’ll share everything you need to know so you can dress to impress with confidence.

1. Show off your best assets

The first thing you need to know is how make the most of your natural beauty and accentuating your best assets. If you love your legs, then wear a skirt. If you think your arms are in good shape, wear a short sleeved t-shirt. Even if you have a totally different culture, you can show off your best assets in other ways. With Islamic clothing, it’s still possible to cover up and look great by choosing something that suits your skin tone, eye colour, and body type.

2. Dress to suit your shape

Dressing to suit your shape is an absolute must. Although it might be obvious, a lot of people overlook the importance of knowing what your body type is and how to dress it properly. You should pay close attention to your body type and shape to determine what looks best on you. Some things look amazing on hourglass figures while other things look best on athletic types.

3. Pick colours that suit your skin tone, hair and eye colour

Everybody has a totally unique skin tone, hair colour, and eye colour. Pick colours of clothing to suit them and you’ll stand out for all of the right reasons. If you pick the wrong colours, you can look tired and worn out. By picking colours that suit you, you’ll always look radiant and beautiful.

4. Never show too much skin

Showing too much skin is a crime against fashion. You should leave something to the imagination! Make sure your outfits are balanced by showing off just the right amount, or you could come across as desperate.

5. Mix textures

Mixing textures will give an outfit depth, which of course instantly impresses all you come into contact with. You should never wear too much of one material at one time, or your outfit will look dull.

6. Make your makeup stand out

Makeup matters too, especially when you want to impress people. Why not clash a red lipstick with a hot pink dress? You could even try a totally new colour on your nails/eyes to give your look the X factor. If your outfit is particularly noticeable on its own, you may want to tone down your makeup by opting for a more natural look instead. Watch Youtube videos for tutorials!

7. Enhance your outfit with the right accessories

All outfits should be enhanced with the right kind of accessories. You could always make an outfit look better with some bangles, necklaces, rings...you name it! Test out different pieces and see what works best so you get the combination just right. But, remember, when it comes to accessorising, the number one rule is less is more.
