Preparing Your Home for the Holidays

It’s that time of year and we are all in holiday mode. Almost every thought is centered around what we need to do or have ready for the special day. The lists are made and the decorations are out of storage, but before you hang the wreath on the door, here are some tips for preparing your home for the holidays.

Thank you Bona for sponsoring this post. To find out more about sponsored post visit my disclosure page.

Get Rid of Clutter

This is usually where I try to start with any project. I hate clutter! But, I have to admit I’m the worst for piling stuff up and bringing stuff into the house that I don’t have a place for, which is why I have to regularly purge my house.

Decluttering first will make your house a lot easier to clean and decorate for the holidays. Plus, I know a lot more stuff (toys) will be coming in over the month. So, I cycle out some of the old stuff leaving room for what is to come. I love getting my son involved in the process, we scavenger the house looking for things we don’t use or need to donate.

Inventory Dishes

You might not be breaking out the fine china this holiday season. I just needed an excuse to take a picture of my lovely tea cups. The truth is regardless of what you are using, you need to inventory. Upon doing such in my home I found we had enough plates for our holiday meal but not enough silverware. That could have been pretty embarrassing, although my son would have been the first to volunteer eating with his hands.

This doesn’t just pertain to what you are eating on, don’t forget to make sure you have enough dishes for food prep. Make sure you have enough bowls, pots, pans and serving dishes to get the job done on the big day.

Pull Out Linens

Chances are you might have overnight guest during the holidays, so make sure you have extra sheets, towels and pillows ready. Don’t forget to pull out those tablecloths, check for stains and get out those wrinkles.

Touch Up Neglected Places

You know those places in your house that months go by before you get around to cleaning, or that you haven’t cleaned since you moved into your house (AKA the stove.) I use this time to clean those areas that often get neglected, baseboards, windows, ceiling fans, etc…

One of the places I hate to admit that I neglect is our wood floor. When we moved into our house a few months back I started researching how to clean them. You know I’m a DIYer, so I naturally want to make my own floor cleaner. The problem is I have heard some pretty conflicting things on what is actually safe for hardwood floors. Since I wasn’t sure what to do, I had definitely been putting it off.

With the holidays coming I couldn’t put it off any longer, it was time to get these floors clean and shiny. I finally decided to try Bona’s hardwood floor mop, and it did awesome! It cleaned my floors so well, and since it is a spray mop it didn’t leave the floor soaking wet! My floors just shined afterwards, and I had the peace of mind knowing I was using a trusted, non-toxic and no residue product. I mean these floors are almost 65 years old, they deserve to be treated right.

If you have wood floors, I definitely recommend this mop! Also, be sure to check out the $3.00 off coupon that they are offering right now when you sign up for their BonaFide Fanatics mailing list.

Child Proof

Even if you have kids, your home might not be child proofed anymore. We get pretty relaxed when we see we can trust our kids with more. If you have small guest coming this holiday season be sure to look out for things that could be dangerous or breakable.

Play Some Music

Yes, you have permission to break out those holiday jams. Not only will it help you get in the mood to do all of the aforementioned chores, but no matter how much your house is or isn’t decorated it will feel more like the holidays with a little music.

I hope you all have a wonderful holiday, and these tips help to make a little less stressful season.

Do you have any tips for getting your home ready for the holidays?
