Best Accessory Trends for 2015 Designer Prom Dresses*

If you’ve finally chosen your prom dress, you’ve probably chosen the shoes to pair with the formal. Here’s a look at other prom accessories.

Without question, when considering prom, the first thought in most girls’ minds is their dress. What shall you wear? What looks good? What flatters you best? What colors are available? Will your dress be a mini or full length? How can we be sure that no one else will be at the prom in “your” dress (believe it or not, there are shops which make a note of purchases, so an identical gown will not be worn to the same event – eg. Atlanta’s Peaches Boutique)? How will the dress photograph in the iconic prom picture?

So you’ve chosen from among the 2015 designer prom dresses, picked out your shoes, picked out your shoes (and “broken them in,” or, at least, walked quite a bit, and maybe rocked out in them), decided on your make-up and hair. But you’re still not done. You’re unlikely to attend many proms in your lifetime, so you want to be sure you have all your ducks in a row for this one. There is still another step: accessories.

Your foundation garments are critical to the overall look. Yup, you have to think under the dress as well as over the dress.

Don’t forget:

  • Bracelets
  • Earrings
  • Garment bags
  • Garters
  • Gloves
  • Glue
  • Hair Fashion
  • Necklaces
  • Purses
  • Slips

What you need (or at least should consider) and why:

Undergarments

A slip will smooth out your dress, act as a barrier between perspiration and your dress, and, if you’ve chosen a full-length full-skirted gown, you are likely to need a specialized “Cinderella” slip that will show your dress off the way “it” deserves. Still, you may want more “personality enhancement,” and go for an add-a-cup bra, or a natural silicone bra (strapless, it is an enhancing bra and stay-on double cups), or double-sized tape to “hold” parts and pieces where “they” belong.

Garment bags

You’ll definitely need one of these if you’re going to be changing into your prom dress from a friend’s house, or if you’re sharing a hotel room with your girlfriends. You’ll need a garment bag to transport your dress and foundation gear. If you’re attending a post-prom party, you may want to switch out your dress, so the garment bag will not only store that post-prom dress, but provide a safe haven for your actual prom dress.

Elbow-Length Gloves

This classic accessory is now available in many colors to coordinate with your dress and is a super fun element to help your prom picture “pop.” Not only are they reasonably priced, they’re fun to wear, and easy to store in your purse when you grow tired or you’re about to eat.

Hair Fashion

You’re likely to have an idea of what you want to do with your hair – whether you’re going to show off the back of your dress or wear your hair down, or wear it both up and down, in a half-and-half style.

But, you know what? The very idea of prom is sparkly and glamorous and elegant and a rare treat. And while many a little girl dreams of marrying a prince, the pool of princes is small – what this translates to: there’s only a small chance you’ll be donning a tiara for any state or national function. So why not take this opportunity, and look into hair accessories. There are beautifully elegant ponytail holders with eight or six rows of rhinestone bling, or single, double or seven-row rhinestone headbands. Also available and hair enhancing are rhinestone hair pins (think those wider “Bobby” pins, tipped with bling, or faux pearls). Little silver stone hair twists or a tiara-style bun-accessory are other ways to feel regal as you step into prom.

Purse

It’s a given you’re not going to be carrying your backpack or messenger bag at prom. But what kind of purse will complete your look? There’s really only one kind of true formal dress wear pocketbook and that is a minaudiere. A minaudiere is basically jewelry that happens to be a purse. If you haven’t seen one, look it up online. The most famous minaudieres are made by Hollywood favorite Judith Leiber. But shops like the aforementioned Peaches Boutique carry affordable and really, nearly-as-cute versions.

Accessories can complete your look and make prom extra special.
