NARS Yachiyo

I don’t think I’ve ever dedicated an entire post to a brush before and, as it’s not the most exciting of topics, it’s unlikely to happen again – but the NARS Yachiyo Kabuki Brush* (£37.50) is easily the most versatile, useful and well-made brushes I own. It’s also beautiful.

I’ve not used a Yachiyo brush before but, apparently, it’s a traditional style of Japanese brush (it’s also a city in Chiba, Japan) and sits within the NARS Kabuki Artisan range. The handle is a nod to its heritage and made from hand-spun black wisteria, lending it an almost unnerving lightness. Once upon a time, when I tried and failed painting, I’d always choose the brush with a bit of reassuring weight behind it; the Yachiyo is incredibly light yet somehow still balanced and comfortable to hold.

The Yachiyo picks up more pigment than other brushes I own from my sheerer blushes (it works particularly well with NARS Doucuer), but is also my go-to when I’m treading lightly with highly pigmented blushes like Tarte Tipsy and & Other Stories Voile Pink and diffuses the colour like nothing else I own.

The slight point at the end makes it precise enough for soft highlighting, targeted application of setting powder and it’s also a firm favourite for contouring. The only minor gripe (I personally feel it’s worth the price tag) is that bristles aren’t the softest I’ve come across, but I’ve not had any issues with shedding and I’m already planning a backup purchase to use exclusively with blushes.
