The Science Of Exfoliation: Why A Little Scrubbing Could Make The World Of Difference


The majority of us know the benefits of regular exfoliation and try to integrate it into our routine when pushed, but did you know there's so much more to get to grips with than understanding it can offer a smoother and more radiant surface? A little buffing in the shower not only feels great, but can really help your overall skincare and beauty routine. The history of exfoliation can be traced back to the Ancient Egyptians, when abrasive minerals and alabaster particles were used for this purpose; they obviously understood the difference a good scrub could make to their tired, overworked and sun exposed skin. Since then a variety of substances have been used to peel, exfoliate and rejuvenate the skin - including natural acids, mineral fragments, plants and direct irritants to stimulate the natural 'shedding' process. Today we rely heavily on ingredients that include sea salt, sugar, oats, fruit kernels and gentle exfoliating particles, but why do we need to ensure we're regularly buffing, scrubbing and exfoliating our skin?


Our skin naturally goes through a thirty-day cycle, where over time the cells travel from the deeper layers to the surface and become full of keratin - which gives skin a rougher and uneven appearance. Although we're programmed to naturally shed away this old skin, sometimes we need a little helping hand (especially as we age.) As we get older the 'cement' holding our cells together becomes thicker, resulting in a build-up of skin cells that makes the sloughing process more difficult to accomplish; this results in a dry, uneven, dull and less-toned appearance. By eliminating the build up of dead skin cells on the surface, the regeneration of new skin cells is stimulated which results in an improved appearance, tone, and feel of the skin.

Consistent exfoliation can not only ensure our skin is healthy looking and refreshed, but it also helps to prevent clogged pores, acne, ingrown hairs, scarring, blemishes and all kinds of infections. If you suffer from breakouts or those annoying bumpy bits on your arms or legs, then exfoliation can really help the skin to regenerate and look like new. If you're struggling with acne, it may just be that your pores are becoming blocked with dead skin cells that are causing irritation and infection. Use a body brush or puff before you get into the shower, brushing down the arms and up the legs to stimulate circulation and clear congestion for radiant skin. If you suffer from lower back pain, gently brush the lower part of the back to stimulate circulation and bring blood flow to the area.
2. Remaining in control of your breathing, inhaling deeper and feeling connected while you apply products will ensure you get the most out of the experience. It's important to do one thing at a time and not rush the process; enjoy those precious moments alone. The combination of positive touch and the shower is profound and shouldn't be underestimated; it's one of the best routines you can have for your well-being.
3. The act of applying your body wash is just as important as the product. Take the time to apply it effectively, connecting emotionally to each part of your body as you gently cleanse. Thank each area for its day-to-day performance as you progress, paying special attention to your feet and arms as they're so hardworking. This will leave you feeling thoroughly energised and ready to face the day.
