Let’s face it, this winter has been brutal. The snow drifts are piling up, the temperatures are dropping insanely low, and ice is keeping people prisoners in their own homes. Cabin fever sets in as we wonder if and when Spring will ever arrive. It’s easy to succumb to boredom and the feeling that the walls are caving in. Here are 10 things that you can do to keep yourself (relatively) sane when you are snowed in.
You have hours stretched out ahead of you with nowhere to go. It’s the perfect time to start that series that everyone is raving about or to catch up on your favorite show. Life rarely seems to slow down but Mother Nature has a way of using the winter to force our schedules to come to a screeching halt at times. Pop some popcorn, grab a mug of cocoa, your warmest blanket and snuggle into the couch.
Pick up that book you have been meaning to start/finish. Get lost in another world and let the time just pass you by.
Remember back in the day when people played board games? Actual games were played with people sitting next to you and not on an Xbox (or whatever the latest and greatest gaming system is). We are huge fans of strategy games (Ticket to Ride, Settlers of Catan, Sabateur, and Pandemic) and Uno in our house.
Have you been meaning to paint a room? Sort through your cupboards? Now’s a great time to get that project started and finished.
Ahhh…..a day of nothing and nowhere to go. Indulge yourself. Long, hot bubble baths, a manicure, and pedicure will leave you feeling revived and pampered.
If you are anything like me, you pin things to your heart’s delight yet never follow through and try them. It’s the perfect time to choose something and try it. Find a new recipe or a DIY craft and try it. Not feeling like actually making anything? Use the time to clean up your Pinterest boards. I love the new update that allows you to move pins to other boards. If you choose to spend some time on Pinterest look me up here!)
Perhaps Mother Nature has really thrown a temper tantrum and your power is out. Gasp! No email? Hmmm….go back to the pre-computer age and write some letters to your family and friends. Who doesn’t love receiving snail mail??
Boring, yes, but mandatory right? Might as well tackle those chores so that when the weather breaks you can get outside and enjoy it!
With all that snow comes a perfect form of exercise. Shoveling. Not fun but it will definitely work those muscles.
Have a snowball fight. Make snow angels. Go outside as the snow is falling and catch snowflakes on your tongue. Take in the wonder and beauty that a soft snowfall can bring. Too cold to be outside? Build blanket forts inside and hang out all day in there. Have a fire and make S’mores. Try to find that little bit of youth that enjoyed snow days and lose that adult nagging sense of responsibility of knowing all the things that have to be done yet can’t be done because of the weather. Give in and enjoy it.
So how do you manage to fight cabin fever when you are snowed in during the long, cold winter months?
