days of heaven

It could be said that there are two kinds of people in regards to Terrence Malick: rabid fans and people who fall asleep during his movies. I say to the latter, fair enough, as his films are kind of quiet and long. I definitely fall into big fan territory, which is why I'm embarrassed that I waited until this year and my 365 Movies in 2013 challenge to watch Malick's Days of Heaven.

Days of Heaven utilizes Malick's trademark use of light and the result is achingly beautiful, creating shots that look like paintings.
Edward Hopper's House by the Railroad was an influence, clearly.

Sam Shepard is downright luscious in this movie, all soft eyes and floppy hair.

Pop culture aside: Ratatat sampled Days of Heaven for their song Party With Children.
