Mantras and The Power of Words

I was really excited for my morning run. Even though it was cold and windy, I couldn’t wait to head outside. Have you ever felt that? As if the endorphins are just waiting to spill out into your bloodstream? Except that didn’t happen.

I waited for my body to warm up but after two miles, I still felt stiff, joints creaking, and I couldn’t get into a comfortable stride. It felt hard and labored. And my mind, sensing a window of vulnerability open, started to spin negative thoughts. Each thought felt like a brick on my shoulder, weighing me down ever so slightly. And I really wanted to quit.

I acknowledged each negative thought. It was hard not too but then I directed my mind back to two words – Just Breathe. And then Embrace the Suck.

I never used to believe in the power of mantras but words are powerful stuff. They have a way of bolstering me like an internal scaffold, helping me to stand up a little taller – shoulders back, heart open, chin up. The vibrations of the words shimmy inside my head, cleaning out the cobwebs, buffing up the inside of my mind until it’s crystal clear and focused.

Last fall, I bought myself a wrap bracelet from Momentum Jewelry with the words Just Breathe. It was a stressful time and I needed the physical reminder to breathe through the difficult moments. Every time I glanced down on my wrist, it was (and still is) a brief moment of mindfulness. It forces me to pause, inhale and exhale.

A few days before the Philly Half last Fall, I attended an event and received one of Momentum’s Foot Notes in my gift bag. I was feeling hesitant and tentative about my goal for the race but the foot note seemed to manifest what was lurking in the back of my mind – Now or Never. Well, yes. It is now or never isn’t it? And having those three words on my shoe as I ran was like having a cheerleader for those 13.1 miles.

In Sanskrit, the word mantra comes from two parts – man comes from the root of the word for mind and tra comes from the root of the word instrument. Mantra can be considered an instrument of the mind and is a tool for meditation.

But you don’t have to mediate in order to make use of mantras. They can be a powerful tool in life, especially at the start of the New Year when everyone’s talking about goals and resolutions. Mantras can help you maintain focus as you go after you goals, a reminder to prompt you to make positive daily choices, a reminder of why you are doing what you are doing.
