LBS Backstage Beauty: Mara Hoffman Fall 2015

Backstage before the Mara Hoffman Fall 2015 collection premiere, we caught up with CATWALK by TIGI US Creative Director Thomas Osborn who told us all about this super chic and fashion-forward undone braided crown look. The inspiration for this intergalactic warrior princess look was guided by Mara Hoffman’s Luke Skywalker-inspired Fall 2015 collection. What I loved about this look is that aside from the crown braid being really fun, there were parts of it that were undone and slightly messy, but still so beautiful.

“We’ve got this softer, thicker braid that incorporates their own hair with some pre-done braids we’ve pinned on.”

“The vibe is definitely this otherworldly, futuristic traveler. When we relay it to the regular girl, it has to be something they can hold onto. Rather than it being this super clean and super slick look, we’ve got some softness to it keeping it modern and fresh.”

This is a great look for girls who want to try something edgy but are worried about it being “perfect”. The beauty of this look is that it doesn’t have to be perfect. For those of us gals with textured/curly tresses, Thomas Osborn had this to say about pulling off the look:

“The great thing about curly hair is that when you braid it, it already has so much to hold onto. When hair has texture and you braid it, it stays. That negates the need for the salt spray and some of these products that give sleek hair more texture. One of the coolest things about braids like this is that when they’re lived in and when they’re a couple days old, is when they look their best.”

Completing the look was makeup sponsored by Maybelline. The look was fresh and dewy with a metallic eye accomplished using their Color Tattoo™ by Eye Studio® product line.

Nails were sponsored by Zoya Nail Polish and the tones were muted with a touch of metallic.

The lead nail artist said this look is fairly easy to accomplish by starting off with a metallic base and then following with light to dark shades going up the nail bed. The best part about this design? The lines can be messy! So you don’t have to worry about messing it up.

Get The Hair Look:

• Prep the hair with CATWALK® by TIGI® Session Series Salt Spray and create a clean, center part from hairline to nape, securing hair in two low ponytails (for the time being)

• Use a paddle brush and a bit of CATWALK® by TIGI® Session Series Work It Hairspray to smooth hair and set the severity of the part

• Using pins, secure one extra-long, pre-made braid (using extensions) just behind the ear and cross over the crown. Repeat with a second pre-made braid in the opposite direction, crossing over the other braid to make an “X” on top of the head

• Next, remove elastics from pigtails and begin braiding the ends of the braids into each pony, using a 3-strand technique and incorporating wefts of hair into the braid as you go to add length. Secure each side with an elastic, leaving a significant amount of unbraided hair below the elastic

• Secure the two braids together, taking care to hide the pins and create the illusion of intertwined braids

• Use fingers to pull on pieces of the braid to create an undone texture and set the look with CATWALK® by TIGI® Session Series Work It Hairspray

Thoughts on this look? Would you try this at home?
