5 NYC art galleries to visit this September

The art world is back from summer holiday and the city has been abuzz with fantastic openings this week. Wandering the gallery openings on the Lower East Side last night was one of those moments where the city feels like a small town, a reunion of sorts. And while a trip to the chelsea galleries is always worthy of an aimless afternoon, these are five shows that I particularly enjoyed. These artists come from diverse backgrounds and experience (emerging and established), and the shows highlight the best of a variety of contemporary styles – from surrealism to abstract, color field to landscape. Perhaps most exciting was to see the ilustrious Hockney reinvent his work by producing a body of iPad prints (The Arival of Spring), resulting in a purely fun and colorful exhibit – true to his painting aesthetic on the surface, but nuanced by his embrace of technology.

PS. If you find yourself in New Haven this week, pop into the fabulous Bruce Davidson/ Paul Caponigro photography exhibit at the Yale Center for British Art.
