Idyll Guides : China Tour

Photos and commentary by Wade Munro for Idyll Guide

Today's Idyll Guide is none other than my own father in law, Wade Munro, a hobby photographer and avid traveler. He and his wife Janet just returned from a tour of China. After enjoying viewing his collection of over 200 select photos, I asked if he would share a few for Lune's Idyll Guide series. What a wonderful contribution! I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.

The Great Wall

Live the dream, walk the Great Wall of China! Building started around 206 BC & continued thru various dynasties. By Ming Dynasty over 8000 kms unified the several Chiefdoms into one nation.

Beijing

Entrance gate to the Forbidden City, no commoners allowed in.

Tiananmen Square, Beijing

Count the animals, there are nine. This symbolically means the Emperor was "one" level below God, who would have ten.

The Bronze Lion guarding the East Gate at the Summer Palace alongside an amazing floral display. Beijing's "Summer Palace" was the summer residence for Emperors and Empresses.

Buddist Temple of Incense - Summer Palace

Terracotta Warriors of Xian

The absolutely amazing Terra Cotta Warriors at Xian. Up to 8000 warriors guarding Emperor Qin Shihuang's Mausoleum are being unearthed, rebuilt and placed in their original positions. Original colour adornments of the warriors are on display for a look at the warriors as they were centuries ago.

A point of interest - the hole in the terra cotta horse was intentional as it let the gases and pressure escape while in the kilns. Otherwise the figure would explode during firing!

Shanghai

Metropolitan Shanghai by day.

Shanghai by night. Locals say "black & white TV view in daytime - Colour TV view at night!

The city aglow.

A visit to the Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Hall reveals huge scale model of the city c/w night lighting!

Dragon decorated wall around the 400 year old Yu Garden in Shanghai.

Memories of a former hobby of mine - beautiful Bosai tree in the Yu Garden.

Yu Garden portal.

Local paddling the river through Watertown, outside Shanghai.

Watertown at Dusk - an amazing reflection on the River!

Gui Lin

Gui Lin's Elephant Park dragon.

A lifetime must see! The Karst limestone outcrops at Gui Lin - once an ancient sea bed, now wonderous to look at while on the Li River

After seeing these in daytime one must see them under night lighting in the Sanjie Liu Impression show in Yangshou.

Local harvesting river plants to feed her livestock. A daily activity!

Dusk settling in over the Li River in Gui Lin

A fitting near to last photo in Gui Lin.
