If you’re like me, you love going to the hair salon. There are no kids asking for you to wipe their bottoms or fighting with their brothers. Just lovely smells, freshly washed hair (that you didn’t have to do yourself!), and maybe even a scalp massage. It’s heavenly. However, it is also costly. As much as we’d like to, we can’t be up in the salon every 4 weeks on the regular. Or at least I can’t. That is why I have come up with 8 tips to make your hair color last longer and go longer in between hair appointments!
They aren’t mind blowing tips, but if you add them all together you just might add a week or two between appointments! Not to mention I think your hair will be feeling all the more fabulous for it.
Yes, I know, it might sound gross, but it’s actually better for your hair! If you wash your hair two times a week you are cutting down the amount of time you are roughing up your hair with shampoos, conditioners, product and even heat. If you have somewhat greasy hair and the thought of two times a week makes you sick to the stomach, I’ve got some tips for you.
About a week before you head to the salon, deep condition with something like this one from Ulta to prep to for the color. It will be it’s healthiest before applying the color, receive it better and help it last longer.
You can do this with some homemade concoctions like coconut oil and some essential oils, or buy a good deep conditioning treatment. It will nourish your hair and limit the split ends thus keeping you out of the salon longer!
This is a toughie and I’ll admit that I don’t always do it. But if you can stand it, rinse your hair in the shower with cold water. If you’re like me and you just can’t bring yourself to switch the water to cold, at the very least, go for luke warm. You can try to stand back away from the stream and just stick your hair in the cool water, it’s a lot more doable although still difficult!
Getting your color done at the salon can be the most expensive part. If you follow this list you’re already on your way to making your hair color last longer. However, you can also buy and mix your own color and do it at home. I always do my own hair color at home and it saves me at least $30-$50 each time. I buy my hair color from Madison Reed in Trieste Red and it is delivered to my home every 6 weeks. I touch up the roots myself and bam – fresh color for $30!
These are amazing, I must admit. I don’t have any grey hair yet and I’m still stoked about it. It’s basically a powder cover up for your roots. Whether you have greys or not, you can still extend the time between colors by just applying this as needed! You can find the little compact one shown above at Madison Reed. For ladies with grey hair it is a must have! You basically just brush on the product where your roots or grey is showing and it will temporarily cover up your roots! I think every woman should have this on hand because let’s be real – who has time to always keep their roots looking perfectly touched up? Well, now you can!
Another genius product. On the John Frieda product page it says that is has “mild dyes and shine boosters to increase the depth and vitality of your hair color. Hair is left full of shine with a fresh from the salon look. Not permanent hair color. Will not lift or lighten hair color. Ammonia and peroxide-free.” I personally haven’t tried this one but it comes highly recommended so I know I need to give it a try. The one I linked to above is brunette but they have a clear or even a color refreshing gloss. Keep that hair color looking vibrant! Madison Reed also came out with a similar product that appears to be quite a bit healthier. They have 8 colors including a gloss. I really want to try this one!
I know it seems like winter and you shouldn’t have to worry about this one, but we should still be careful! Just because it’s cold outside doesn’t mean the sun isn’t doing it’s thang! Try hats or beenies to cover up when it’s cold but sunny. Another great way is to try Redken Color Extend Sun Set Shampoo and Solar Screen SPF 12
There you have it! I bet if you combined these 8 tips to make your hair color last longer you could save a bunch of money this next year by going longer between hair color appointments! Any other tips you might add? I’d love to hear them!
