Tips on How to Care for Sensitive Skin

I cared for my skin from the inside out with Aveeno® Active Naturals as part of a sponsored post for Socialstars. All opinions & tips are from yours truly! #Aveeno

Skin can be a tricky thing, can’t it? For me, my skin worked one way when I was younger and I’ve spent the last couple years trying to figure out what was going to work for me in my thirties! Since I’ve recently got into learning more about skin care, I thought it would be fun to do a little series on how to care for different skin types. Today I wanted to start with how to care for sensitive skin.

How to care for sensitive skin

Only wash your face at night

Washing your face too much can irritate your skin and can lead to some of the ailments people with sensitive skin often experience. Just wash your face at night to remove all your makeup & gunk from the day and moisturize well before going to bed. When you wake up in the morning, rinse your face with some warm water and pat dry. Apply your daily moisturizer and you are good to go! Less work and it’s better for your skin!

Use a gentle face cleanser

The last thing people with sensitive skin need is products with harsh ingredients in them. Try a cleanser like the Aveeno® Ultra-Calming® Foaming Cleanser. It’s really light weight, doesn’t rub or grate against your skin and doesn’t dry your skin out. It is formulated to reduce the appearance of redness and is gentle enough to use every day. It’s also fragrance free, soap free, noncomedogenic and hypoallergenic. By using a gentle face wash like this one only at night, there is less chance to irritate your skin!

Moisturize well

Even though sensitive skin can be tricky, you still need to moisturize well! When your skin is dry it can cause red spots, itchiness, and even dry, cracked areas. It’s important to find a moisturizer that will effectively moisturize without irritating your skin. Aveeno® Ultra-Calming® Daily Moisturizer is formulated with ACTIVE NATURALS® CALMING FEVERFEW® which is a skin care breakthrough! Purified feverfew extract is a natural ingredient related to chamomile and has great has anti-irritant benefits. It’s also noncomedogenic which means it won’t clog pores or cause you to break out.

Wear SPF

This rule should apply to all skin types! Cover that precious, sensitive facial skin up! The sun can do some serious damage, even if we don’t always see it. It’s best to wear sunscreen every day, even if it doesn’t look sunny outside to prevent wrinkles, age spots, and overall sun damage. This way your skin is always protected and you also reduce the chance or irritation from sunburn or dryness. The Aveeno® daily moisturizer I just spoke about has an SPF 15 which is great for everyday use.

Stay away from too many products

The more you put on your face, the more chance you have to irritate it! Find some great products that you love and that work for your skin and stick with them. Just like washing your face, less is more in this area. Same goes for the make you apply after moisturizing, I would suggest trying to keep it to a minimum!

Be consistent

People with sensitive skin usually don’t do well with a lot of change. Just like staying away from too many products, people with sensitive skin should definitely be consistent with what works. The more you change up your skin care routine, the more chance you have that you skin isn’t going to react well to something you try. Now, of course, you do have to first find a routine that works. So I would suggest finding products recommended for sensitive skin and trying them for a solid week or two. When you see the results you want, continue! If not, phase that product out and trying another. When you’ve got it, stick with it!

You are what you eat!

So much of what goes into our bodies matters! If you have sensitive skin, a lot of times this could have something to do with what you’re eating. Maybe you are intolerant to something that you don’t even know about and your skin is reacting to it. If have tried some great products for sensitive skin and you still aren’t seeing results, try looking into your diet. Maybe eliminating some foods or seeing a specialist to test for allergies. Once you’ve got that in check, with the right products for sensitive skin, you should be all set! **Just to be clear, I am no doctor! So please consult your own before you come to any conclusions regarding your diet. **

Stay away from fragrance

A lot of the time, sensitive skin doesn’t react well to added fragrance in products. Try to stay away from fragrance and look for products that are hypoallergenic. Aveeno® Ultra-Calming® Foaming Cleanser is a great start because, like I mentioned, it is fragrance free, soap free, noncomedogenic and hypoallergenic. Killer combo for sensitive skin if you ask me!

I hope some of these tips help you out on your journey to great skin care for sensitive skin! As you might know, I usually use the oil cleansing method and am happy with it. However, I realize it isn’t for everyone! Some people don’t like the feeling of washing their face with oil, that the process is more time consuming, or just don’t want to try it. I get it! There are definitely nights I don’t feel like doing it either. This foaming cleanser is going to fill in when I’m just too tired to use my regular method. It will also be added to my travel bag (along with the makeup remover wipes)!

Do you have sensitive skin? Any tips you might want to add?
