Holistic Thinking: Tips for Tracking Your Health

I’ve received a lot of messages from my subbies over the years asking how I stay healthy, fit, happy… Basically, how do I live a healthy life? Of course there is no one answer and a ton of room for improvement – we are ever evolving creatures after all. But listening to my body and being conscious of my mental health has always helped. Health is much more complicated than a diet or exercise regimen. Our body is made up of a collection of systems that all work together so it’s no wonder that you need to keep each part in check in order to maintain the whole.

No matter how nutritious your diet is or how often you hit the gym, if you’re not paying attention to those other factors like sleeping right, dealing with stress or where those little aches and pains may be coming from, it will be tough to feel truly healthy. By thinking of your health holistically — considering how the parts are connected to the whole — you can pinpoint areas of improvement and areas of success (both inside and out). Here’s some tips to become more in tune with your health:

Write It

Journaling is a valuable resource that doctors don’t often tell you to do. Whether you suffer from headaches or want to make sure you’re getting enough vitamins, jotting your thoughts down in a journal will help you notice patterns (especially about those routines that have become second nature) and get to know your body more.

Check It

Over the holidays, I was doing so many things at once I felt like I literally didn’t sleep (and that’s kind of true, sad to say!). Looking back over the month, I knew it was time to get organized mentally speaking. What I really needed was to take my own advice and

de-stress! It’s tough to force yourself to slow down, but giving yourself a monthly check-in will do two things: 1) Act as a self-imposed intervention and 2) Teach you what went right, so you can do it again next month.

Work It

Being more conscious is one of my resolutions this year, but taking the time to become more aware of myself and actions wouldn’t do much if I didn’t make changes when I need to or try to always improve. Once you write it down and check it out, be sure to put it into practice! Get more sleep, learn to unplug, eliminate foods from your diet that slow you down, just do whatever it is that you just learned your body needs. Easy? Not exactly. Worth it? Uh, YES!

How did January go for you? Reflect on it and share what it reveals!
