From One Mom to Another: Brianne's Story

I am so excited to be bringing back a series I used to do around here that showcases so many different types of moms in and out of the blogging community. Each Monday I will share bits and pieces of advice from these moms directly to you! I'll also include all of their social media information so that you can follow their stories regularly!

Today's mom is Brianne- she blogs over at Swashbuckle & Flow and highlights what life is like with a child who has diabetes and another who has ADHD. Her story is truly inspiring and she has quickly become a daily read of mine.

What is something you wish you knew before having a baby?

I dove head first into the What To Expect books when I was pregnant with my son. I wish someone had politely took the book away and tossed it in the trash.

My children are my greatest teacher, for I have learned things on this journey that cannot be taught from a book. Be present, try new things, but in the end, always trust your Mama Instinct.

What is your most surprising mommy moment?

My daughter was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes when she was 3 years old. We were devastated, as we were unable to picture what our new life would look like. The hospital did an amazing job of educating us on how to care for and manage her Diabetes, and the day after her diagnosis - it was up to us.
I remember in the moments leading up to the first time I administered her insulin, I found a strength I didn't know I had. You don't realize how strong you are, when you have no choice. My daughter has since adjusted beautifully, and I was so surprised by how much she feeds off my confidence. When I display that, she follows suit. I am inspired by her bravery and grace every day.

How has motherhood impacted your life all around?

Motherhood is the most challenging yet rewarding role I have ever taken on. No matter what I accomplish in my career, my legacy will be my kids.

Their impact extends far beyond the sleepless nights with a newborn, far beyond the anxiety that a diagnosis brings, and far beyond the busy schedule their social calendars bring (they have a better social life than we do!) I live for the moments at the end of the day, when I'm tucking them into bed and they throw their arms around my neck and say "I love you." No matter how challenging the day was, those three words have the power to refresh. Moments like that make it worth it.

What is the BEST piece of advice you've ever received about motherhood?

To not chase perfection.
Perfection is impossible. Instead, strive for progress.
Also, as mothers, we share a common ground. Try not to judge their parenting choices solely because they are not something you would do. If their child is healthy, happy and thriving - then that is all that matters. Support is so important, as it truly takes a village to raise a child.
But most importantly, YOU CAN DO THIS. Take a deep breath, and take each day one moment at a time.

Anything else we should know about you, mommy-related or not?

My son is overcoming the challenges posed by his ADHD everyday. I am very proud of what he has accomplished - improved grades and being named Student of the Week at school, and his focus lead him to discover a newfound joy in reading.
As I teach these little humans about life, they are teaching me as well - the little things are actually really big things, to appreciate the simple pleasures, and most of all ... to just have fun.

Thank you so very much Brianne for sharing your story!
