5 Design Rules to Break (Modern Furniture)

What’s the best way to make a statement in any room? By breaking out of the box of convention. The most inspirational artists are the ones who mastered the fundamental rules of their medium and used that knowledge to flip them on their ears in exciting, innovative ways. I’m taking five of the most conventional design rules and showing you how rebelling against them can help you envision fresh, new ideas of your own.

Rule #1: Stick to one style.

Decorating a room from the floors to the lighting fixtures with one time period can make you feel restricted to a certain time and place. Put a modern twist on a classic theme by mixingpast with present, east with west, simple with ornate, for an exciting and eclectic finish to any room. Break this rule by combining you and your partner’s preferred styles to customize your house into a home. Keep in mind that an 80/20 ratio is key to integrating almost any two styles together.

Rule #2: Match your colors.

Conservative, carefully selected color schemes can leave a room dull and tiresome. Take your home decor to the next level by stepping outside of a safe color scheme with an unexpected pop of color. Adding a bright color accent will draw the eye to a specific area of the room and bring a newfound flow of energy into the space.

Rule #3: One pattern per room.

A single focal pattern no longer needs to define your room’s character. Defying this old rule makes for an interesting, fun space and opens the opportunity for endless creativity. Be sure to vary the scales of patterns for an added dimensional flare. Coordinate the patterns with a common color to prevent the patterns from competing too heavily against one another.

Rule #4: Keep neutral colored walls for small spaces.

Small spaces pose many challenges, but you don’t have to sacrifice color for comfort. A monochromatic color scheme can open up a room, but if you’re looking to use more color, choose contrasting colors on an accent wall.Going bold in a small space can create depth and actually create the illusion of a greater square footage.

Rule #5: Dining chairs stay in their set

The dining table is another element that can be revived for an additional flavor in the home. Dining chairs no longer have to match the table, nor one other. Add colored chairs to a dark, sleek table for a cool contrast or start a collection of mismatched vintage chairs around your favorite table. You can also place a dining chair in an unexpected place, like beside the bed for an unusual alternative to the ordinary nightstand.
