The Birks Are Back

It started almost two years ago, when Phoebe Philo sent fur-lined bejewelled iterations of the notorious hippie sandal down the runway at Céline. I was apprehensive at first, though that feeling was long gone by the time I noticed the yellow fur heels – they’re still at the top of my wish list should I ever take up cross-dressing. Then Instagram blew up with them. They were everywhere. Birkenstock madness/fever/whatever you want to call it. And so I caved and bought a pair, then wore them to death.

Now, given the rising temperature in Sydney, the ex-‘it’ shoe is making a comeback for spring. Interestingly, nothing’s changed. The formula to wearing Birkenstocks — the ‘look’, if you will — remains exactly the same.

Perhaps this is just one example of the slowing down of fashion — another, more recent example being Jean Paul Gaultier’s decision to exit ready-to-wear. Or perhaps it’s just evidence in support of that Yves Saint Laurent quote that always seems to be circulating Tumblr: fashions fade, style is eternal.

Shirt, ASOS. Jeans, Cotton On (similar). Sandals, Birkenstock.
