Be Inspired: Photos of Children

Don’t be intimidated by your camera. Be inspired.

It may be a completely absurd and irrational fear, but as my kids grow older I become obsessed with capturing their human evolution. This is the haunting part of being such a visual person with OCD tendencies. But it is fun to play with lighting, shadow, texture, unexpected scenery, subject matter, costumes, mood, etc. Don’t leave it up the professionals when it comes to little moments that inspire you to be creative (though, there is good reason to capture milestones with the help of a professional photographer). The shoot below happened last year around Mother’s Day. I had just purchased a piece of faux Mongolian fur with a gift certificate given to me by my coworkers when I left my job to be home with the littles. After noticing the intense afternoon light pouring in from the living room window, I knew I couldn’t miss this moment. The results were really surprising. What spoke to me in light and texture turned into one of my favorite photo shoots to date. It wasn’t planned nor was it forced. It’s not too late to learn the basics of your DSLR. Don’t be intimidated. Be inspired.
