Kids Event in Science City at Union Station

If you are in the Kansas City area this Saturday and looking for a fun and free activity with the kids check out STEMfest and Science City at Union Station.

What: Thousands of children and adults are expected to attend the first-ever Time Warner Cable STEMfest Nov. 10 at Union Station. Exhibitors will provide fun, hands-on Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) activities to help encourage STEM careers, and all those attending will receive FREE admission to Science City for the day.
Time Warner Cable STEMfest was created as part of the company’s Connect a Million Minds initiative (www.connectamillionminds.com), which aims to engage youth in hands-on learning opportunities in the areas of STEM. For Time Warner Cable STEMfest, TWC has joined forces with the Girls Scouts of NE Kansas & NW Missouri and Science City to engage STEM partners from the local community to be a part of the event and showcase ways that their organization engages kids in STEM learning opportunities. Children of all ages will be able to participate in hands-on, discovery learning activities with each of Time Warner Cable’s STEM partners.
There will be many exciting activities and visuals, including robots, hands-on science projects and more!
Why: Research finds that the majority of adults agree that STEM education is important for today’s youth to be successful in the future, however most are also concerned that youth are falling behind in obtaining adequate math and science skills. The stats back up these thoughts, as workforce projections for 2014 show that 15 of the 20 fastest growing occupations require significant science or mathematics training. Studies also indicate that the U.S. needs 400,000 new graduates in STEM fields by 2015. Yet, the majority of middle-school students say they would rather take out the garbage than do their math homework.
