Birchbox Review – January 2015

Birchbox is a new subscription for me. I patiently awaited it’s arrival in Canada, and it finally came! Well, it came a while ago but I totally didn’t realize until last month- but as soon as I realized I was alllll over that subscription. I believe that the Birchbox Canada products differ a bit from the US Birchbox, so I’m hoping that we are getting equally as great things (and judging by this box, we are) as US customers. Anyways- onto the Birchbox for January!

This was the item I was initially most excited about. It’s an Amika dry shampoo and is the cutest packaging I have ever seen a dry shampoo come in. Seriously- how cheery is it?! My number one favorite thing about this dry shampoo in comparison to others is that it goes on clear. It seems that every other brand I’ve tried has left baby powder streaks in my hair that just won’t rub in.. and on red hair it just ends up making it look like I have some seriously grey roots coming in! I will most probably be buying the full version of this when I run out. The full size sells for $20.50 on Amazon.

Now, the product that I ended being REALLY excited about after using was this derma e Hydrating Night Creme. I am normally not into getting skincare products in subscription boxes because they’re just far less exciting than getting new makeup- BUT, I just so happened to have just got a derma e cleanser, moisturizer and serum to try out, so this night cream just completed the set. It’s also amazing. I have to touch on the eczema side of things- I have never found a moisturizer that will assist in clearing up my eczema. And believe me, I have tried every moisturizer under the sun, including several specifically for eczema. I had a few eczema patches that were lingering and wouldn’t go away after I came back from New Zealand, and I put this night cream on them just to see how it went, and no joke- it healed those patches over night. I don’t mean my eczema was totally gone, but it wasn’t red and the area dried up (which means it’s healing over). This all sounds gross, but eczema sufferers totally know what I’m talking about. And I swear, if you have eczema, you HAVE to try this. I’ve already scouted out someone on a local buy and sell group for my area that didn’t want their sample so I’m going to pick it up from her today, haha. I seriously LOVE this stuff! The full size retails for $16.99 on Amazon and is worth every. single. penny.

I hated this, I’ll be honest. I have nothing nice to say about this product, haha. Well, other than that it functions as a regular hand/body cream, but that’s nothing to be too excited about. I REALLY don’t like the scent at all. I find it quite masculine, but not a good masculine. Just not into this. You don’t want to buy this, so I’m not going to link you to it… hahah.

I was super excited about this ModelCo Party Proof matte lipstick in my box (because I looooove trying new lipsticks!), and then wasn’t excited when I saw the color (because anything remotely nude-ish or in a brown tone generally just looks awful on me), and then excited again when I finally tried it. The formula is really nice, it goes on super smooth and isn’t making my lips feel dry, and surprisingly enough, I like the color. It’s just a little bit darker and a tiny bit more in the nude spectrum than my natural lip color, so I think I can pull it off fairly well. If I’m being honest, I started writing about how I was sad that this lipstick ended being this shade because it would look horrible on me (which is Dawn to Dusk, by the way), then I went and tried it on just now and turns out, I like it. These lipsticks come in trios, there’s a Classics trio (pinks and reds) and a Neutrals trio. I may buy the Classics trio to try them out, because I’m really liking the formula of this one! The trios retail for $20 in the Birchbox store.

Last up in my January Birchbox is this sample of Whish shaving cream. I don’t ever really use shaving cream just because I find it quite time consuming in comparison to a quick lather with soap, but I will definitely give this a try because I’ve heard good things about this brand and have been interested to try them out myself. I love the cute, simple packaging and the scent I got is acai grapefruit, and I am a lover of all things grapefruit scented. The full size retails for $9.99 on Amazon.

That was my Birchbox for January 2015! I am quite happy with it, considering it’s my first box. I also forgot to mention how much I love the actual box it came in. It’s SO cute! I will most definitely be saving this to store things in just because it’s so pretty. A friend of mine, Cassie from Southeast by Midwest, actually mentioned in her Birchbox unboxing post that she’d heard Birchbox say to keep the boxes for some reason, though we don’t know the reason yet. I’m wondering what they have up their sleeve! I’m not sure if whatever it is will apply to Birchbox Canada members, but I won’t be too sad if we’re not part of whatever it is because I’ll definitely get use out of this box anyways.

If you want to subscribe to Birchbox yourself, I would highly recommend it based on my experience this month! Canadians can subscribe here, and Americans can subscribe here (new US customers can use code 10FORME to get a free $10 to spend on future purchases in the store). Each month you get five personalized samples, and it’s only $10 a month (plus $4.95 shipping for Canadians) so it’s not a huge financial commitment to try out new products. Another thing I love is that you can leave a quick review for each product you get every month and for each review you get points that can then be redeemed for money to spend in the store (similar to Ipsy, but maybe even better because you can choose from anything rather than from a select few items).

Have you tried Birchbox?
