Easy New Year’s Eve Poppers

New Year’s Eve is right around the corner. We usually get together with family friends (they’ve even traveled across time zones) to celebrate New Year’s Eve. We go out to an all-you-can-eat Chinese buffet (this is our friends’ tradition that we’ve adopted), play games, watch kitschy movies like the original Plant of the Apes series, eat treats, watch the ball drop in Times Square and then go right to sleep. May not be the most exciting tradition for you party animals out there, but it’s fun and it’s our tradition. Last year I decided I wanted to add a new tradition to our celebration and make easy New Year’s Eve Poppers.

You know me, I had to start with a repurposed item and this time it’s paper roll tubes. I had wrapping paper tubes left over from wrapping Christmas gifts, but you can easily use paper towel tubes. I cut the tubes into lengths about as 4 ” long.

I cut a slit about 1/3 of the way around each tube to make it easier to pull the popper open.

Then I grabbed some sparkly, festive wrapping paper and candy I bought at the after Christmas sales.

I wrapped each tube with the wrapping paper.

I filled each tube with candy before twisting the paper on either end of the tube and tying it with ribbon.

The wrapping paper was difficult to tear (it had a plastic coating that made it sparkly) so I cut a slit in each tube to make it easier to pop open. I recommend you do a test run with one of your poppers to make sure they’re not too frustrating to open (ummm, learn from my mistake. While it was funny for me to watch everyone struggle to open the poppers, it wasn’t very hospitable of me).

It’ll take you less than 30 minutes to whip up a batch of these fun and easy New Year’s Eve Poppers. Happy New Years!
