Easy Sharpie Dot Mug

My oldest daughter wanted to make gifts for her group of friends. What item can anyone use? A coffee mug of course, and if you make it adorable and personalized, then even better. My daughter made these easy Sharpie dot mugs for her friends (but not with office supply Sharpies).

These really are easy and quite satisfying to make.

Supplies

Ceramic coffee mug

Vinyl and electronic cutting machine (or letter stickers)

Glass paint marker or Sharpie Oil-Based Paint Marker

Clean the mug with glass cleaner or rubbing alcohol before you start. Place your initial letter in the center of the mug. With your pen, dot around the letter. Concentrate the dots on the edge of the vinyl so that it will make a distinct letter when you remove the vinyl. Continue the dots out away from the letter in your preferred pattern. My daughter chose to have the dots form an oval around the initial.

You can have the dots disperse as they move out away from the initial or have them remain more concentrated. That’s what’s so fun about this project – you can do whatever you want.

According to the directions on my glass paint marker, allow the paint to air cure for at least 8 hours. Next bake the mug in the oven at 375°F for 40 minutes in an oven that is not preheated. I placed my mugs upside down on a cookie sheet. Placed the cookie sheet in the oven and then set the temperature. Allow the mugs to cool in the oven with the oven door cracked. I let mine cool overnight. They should be dishwasher safe, but to be sure to protect your work of art, I’d recommend hand-washing them.

Since my daughter made these mugs, we’ve made 3 other dot projects and they’re all adorable. Just think, they were all inspired by these easy Sharpie dot mugs. Have you made any of these mugs?
