Two Days in Milano Pt.II

Voici la suite de nos aventures à Milan, une belle après midi passée à flâner entre le Duomo, la galerie Vittorio Emmanuele, et la merveilleuse Pinacothèque de Brera qui abrite de nombreux trésors du quattrocento; une vraie journée de touristes en somme ! Milan n’est pas ma ville favorite en Italie, mais j’aime son coté ville industrielle du XIXème, on y trouve quelques beaux témoignages du style Liberty (l’art nouveau italien) comme en a photographié mon amie Annalisa sur son blog Rocaille. D’ailleurs, c’est avec elle et Pauline que nous sommes parties le lendemain à Venise pour découvrir la tant attendue exposition sur la Casati, la « Divina Marchesa », et c’était follement excitant ! Un périple de passionnées. Je fantasmais qu’une telle expo existe un jour, et lorsque j’ai découvert que le rêve était enfin devenu réalité, j’ai presque eu du mal à y croire…J’avais donc décidé de ne pas trop en attendre, afin de ne pas être déçue, mais j’ai été agréablement surprise par la qualité (et rareté) des œuvres présentées, comme ce fabuleux portrait d’Augustus John du musée de Toronto, la toile hantée de Romaine Brooks, les poignantes photographies de Cecil Beaton qui immortalisent une Casati des dernières années, ainsi que la véritable figure de cire envoyée à D’Annunzio comme objet de fantasmes…Quand au palais Fortuny, il ne pouvait être que l’écrin idéal pour cette belle exposition qui je l’espère, fera sortir cette figure légendaire de l’oubli relatif dans laquelle elle sommeille…
Here is the next (and final) chapter of our adventures in Milan, a beautiful afternoon spent around the Duamo, the Vittorio Emmanuele gallery, and the wonderful Brera Pinacoteca, with its breathtaking masterpieces from the Quattrocento; a very interesting touristic day ! Milan is not my favorite city in Italy, but I like its industrial XIXth century side, you can see some beautiful Liberty buildings there, like the ones my friend Annalisa photographed for her blog Rocaille. By the way, it is with her and Pauline that we took the train to Venice the next day, in order to discover the long-awaited exhibition on Luisa Casati, the « Divina Marchesa », and it was such a thrill ! A exciting journey for the long-time fans that we are. I have been forever dreaming of an exhibition like this one and couldn’t believe my eyes when it became real…This is why I had decided to not expect too much from it, so I wouldn’t be disapointed, but actually it was a very pleasant surprise thanks to the quality (and rarity) of the artworks : the fabulous portrait by Augustus John, the haunted painting of Romaine Brooks, the very moving pictures of Cecil Beaton that immortalized a very old Casati, and the true wax figure that she sent to D’Annunzio as a fantasy toy. The palazzo Fortuny was the most perfect choice for this beautiful exhibition which I hope will give this unique woman the recognition and immortality she truly deserves.
